{"id":184710,"date":"2022-05-16T20:10:52","date_gmt":"2022-05-16T14:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=184710"},"modified":"2022-05-16T20:10:52","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T14:40:52","slug":"explained-the-science-behind-twin-cyclones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-the-science-behind-twin-cyclones\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained | The science behind twin cyclones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pair of tropical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyclones<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cyclone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asani &amp; Karim<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(one in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern hemisphere)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , one on each side of the equator have been formed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are twin cyclones originating in the same longitude and now drifting apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are Twin Cyclones?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interplay of the wind and the monsoon system combined with the Earth system produces twin cyclones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Formation of twin cyclones: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are basically formed by equatorial <\/span><b>Rossby waves.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rossby waves are named for <\/span><b>famous meteorologist Carl-Gustaf Rossby<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who was the first to explain that these waves arose due to the rotation of the Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are huge waves in the ocean with wavelengths of around 4,000\u20135,000 kilometers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This system has a vortex in the Northern Hemisphere and another in the Southern Hemisphere, and each of these is a mirror image of the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vortex in the north spins <\/span><b>counterclockwise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has a positive spin, while the one in the Southern Hemisphere spins in the <\/span><b>clockwise direction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and therefore has a negative spin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both have a positive value of the vorticity which is a measure of the rotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the process behind the formation of Twin Cyclones?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the vorticity is positive in both Northern and Southern hemispheres, as is the case with Rossby waves, the air in the boundary layer, which is moist, is lifted slightly. That is enough to set off a feedback process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the air is lifted slightly, the water vapour condenses to make clouds. As it condenses, it lets out the latent heat of evaporation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The atmosphere warms, this parcel of air rises, and positive feedback is set off by this process. The warmer parcel of air can rise further because it is lighter than the surrounding air, and it can form deeper clouds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, moisture comes in from both sides. This leads to the formation of a cyclone if certain conditions are present.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Madden-Julian Oscillation or MJO?\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karim and Asani are \u201ctwin\u201d cyclones not only because they formed at the same time in the same general area but also because they were formed primarily from the same \u201cparent\u201d circulation: the Madden-Julian Oscillation or MJO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MJO is a large cluster of clouds and convection, around 5000-10,000 kilometres in size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is composed of a Rossby wave and a Kelvin wave, which is a type of wave structure that was seen in the ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the eastern side of the MJO is the Kelvin wave, while on the western, trailing edge of the MJO, is the Rossby wave, once again with two vortices on either side of the equator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>Explained | The science behind twin cyclones<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>The Hindu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><b> 13th May 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
