What are the factors that can lead us to a sustainable vaccination programme?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

A key factor is <\/span>cold chain management<\/span><\/b> because improper supply of vaccines can lead to decline in the potency or effectiveness of the vaccine.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to cold chain management, electricity is required as a supportive infrastructure for cold chains.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why should India build a strong foundation for the cold chain system?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India runs the <\/span>Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP)<\/span><\/b> to deliver routine immunisation. It was launched in 1985. Further, the programme was revitalized in 2014 to achieve full immunisation coverage of all children and pregnant women at a rapid pace.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India has rolled out one of the largest vaccination drives (Covid-19) in the world. The COVID-19 vaccination efforts relied on the <\/span>cold chain infrastructure<\/span><\/b> established under the UIP.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pandemic has also encouraged an interest in <\/span>preventive health technology<\/span><\/b>, especially in vaccines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Globally, nearly half the vaccines distributed around the world go to <\/span>waste<\/span><\/b> due to a failure to properly control storage temperatures.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In India, around 20% of <\/span>temperature-sensitive healthcare products <\/span><\/b>are found damaged due to insufficient cold chains.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The government has developed a <\/span>cloud-based digital platform<\/span><\/b> Co-WIN. This helped to facilitate registration, immunisations and appointments, and issues digital vaccine certificates, highlighting the benefits of digitisation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Health Ministry has been digitising the <\/span>vaccine supply chain network<\/span><\/b> through the use of cloud technology. For example, <\/span>the Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network (eVIN)<\/span><\/b> is being developed with support from <\/span>Gavi<\/span><\/b>, the <\/span>Vaccine Alliance<\/span><\/b>, and implemented by the <\/span>UN Development Programme.<\/span><\/b> This will support healthcare workers in the last mile in <\/span>supervising<\/span><\/b> and maintaining the <\/span>efficiency<\/span><\/b> of the vaccine cold chain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a need to <\/span>improve electrification<\/span><\/b>, especially in the last mile. The <\/span>solar-driven technolog<\/span><\/b>y can be explored to integrate sustainable development. For instance, 72% of the functioning health centres in Chhattisgarh have been solarised to tackle disruption in service.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The world including India need to <\/span>build back better and stronger<\/span><\/b>. In the post-covid era, there is an opportunity to develop <\/span>unbroken<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>resilient cold chain systems<\/span><\/b> that can augment the <\/span>immunisation landscape<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The government needs to invest in the cold chain management for immunisation facilities. This would lead to <\/span>India\u2019s future pandemic preparedness<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
