News<\/span><\/b>: Recently, <\/span>the Droughts in Numbers, 2022 report was\u202fpresented by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Drought in Numbers Report?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The report is a collection of data on the <\/span>effects<\/span><\/b> of droughts<\/span><\/b> on our ecosystem and the manner in which they can be mitigated through <\/span>efficient planning<\/span><\/b> for the future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The report also gives information about negotiations that are undergoing at the <\/span>UNCCD\u2019s 15th<\/sup> Conference of Parties (COP15) <\/span><\/b>on key issues like drought, land restoration, and related aspects such as land rights, gender equality and youth empowerment<\/span>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is UNCCD’S COP15?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

UNCCD\u2019s COP15 focuses on <\/span>desertification<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>land degradation<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>drought<\/span><\/b>. The theme for COP15 has been kept to be \u201c<\/span>Land. Life. Legacy: From scarcity to prosperity.<\/span><\/b>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The conference has brought together <\/span>government representatives<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>private sector<\/span><\/b> members, and <\/span>civil society stakeholders<\/span><\/b> to ensure that land continues to benefit present and future generations. They are expected to <\/span>brainstorm<\/span><\/b> sustainable ideas to further land restoration and drought resilience, focusing on \u201c<\/span>future-proofing<\/span><\/b> land use.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It proposes to tackle \u201cthe <\/strong><\/span>interconnected challenges<\/span><\/b> of <\/span>land degradation<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>climate<\/span><\/b> change<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>biodiversity loss<\/span><\/b>\u201d in the ongoing <\/span>UN\u202fDecade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-30).<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The UNCCD envisions restoring <\/span>one billion hectares<\/span><\/b> of degraded land by 2030, creating a <\/span>land degradation-neutral world<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the findings of the report?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The number and duration of droughts around the world has increased by an alarming 29% since 2000.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As per the report, Globally, droughts have caused <\/span>economic losses <\/span><\/b>of approximately $124 billion between 1998 and 2017 due to severe droughts. Similarly, India\u2019s <\/span>Gross Domestic Product (GDP)<\/span><\/b> reduced by 2 to 5% in the same period.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pattern of drought emergencies between 2020 and 2022<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>It has revealed that <\/span>many parts of India<\/span><\/b> fall under the list of regions that are <\/span>vulnerable<\/span><\/b> to droughts globally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Human impact<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Drought is the <\/span>second-worst disaster<\/span><\/b> after flooding. For example, Africa was the worst hit, with 134 droughts, of which 70 occurred in East Africa.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It affected more than <\/span>a billion people<\/span><\/b> around the world between 2000-19. The <\/span>worst<\/span><\/b> sufferers<\/span><\/b> are <\/span>women<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>girls<\/span><\/b>, especially in emerging and developing countries. The droughts impact their education, nutrition, health, sanitation, and safety.<\/span><\/p>\n
