Trends of Urbanization<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

In 1960, the global rate of urbanisation was at 33.61%. In 2003, more people were living in cities than in villages. In 2020, the global urbanisation rate was at 56.15% in 2020.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, globally, the late 20th century saw rapid urbanisation, especially among the newly <\/span>decolonised countries<\/span><\/b> from <\/span>Africa, Latin America <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>Asia<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the <\/span>World Urbanisation Prospects report<\/span><\/b>, the rate of urbanisation in Asia was close to 50% by 2018. Further, it is projected to be 52.3% for Asia and around 37.6% for South Asian (sub-region) by the year 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s trends<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The 20th and 21st centuries witnessed India\u2019s rapid and sustained urban growth.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1960, India\u2019s rate of urbanisation was <\/span>17.94%.<\/span><\/b> In 2020, India\u2019s urbanisation rate was <\/span>34.92%.<\/span><\/b> Further, India is projected to have about <\/span>35%<\/span><\/b> urbanisation by the end of 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

State-wise trends in India<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

According to the <\/span>Ministry of Health and Family Welfare<\/span><\/b>, the <\/span>UTs<\/span><\/b> having the <\/span>highest percentage<\/span><\/b> of urban population are Chandigarh (99.63% in 2020) and Delhi (99.23% in 2020). The <\/span>states<\/span><\/b> having large area and population like Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh) have the least percentage of projected population living in cities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Merits of urbanisation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

A city is a breathing entity which is <\/span>ever-growing<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>evolving<\/span><\/b>. The cities shapes culture and give impetus to the realisation of dreams and ambitions of people who come from the countryside.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a positive correlation between <\/span>urbanisation<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>economic growth<\/span><\/b>. The cities and the process of urbanization offer a lot of <\/span>developmental advantage<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbanization leads to rise of agglomeration economies, the formation of industrial clusters, and the increase in competitiveness among and within each state<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Urbanisation also offers solutions to reduce <\/span>income inequality<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>poverty<\/span><\/b>. It enhances jobs and incomes as more talent is attracted to urban conglomerates.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the issues?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Looking at India\u2019s urbanisation rate, it seems India has a <\/span>sluggish rate<\/span><\/b> of urbanisation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s Urbanisation is below the <\/span>global rate of\u202furbanisati<\/span><\/b>on as well as the <\/span>Asian average of urbanisation rate<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In India, \u201cCities\u201d as a scope of study is a relatively new field. India has primarily been seen as a village-based country during colonisation and a few years right after independence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the post-independence years, industrial development, regional integration, and economic growth became priorities, and the \u201curban question\u201d remained missing from the discourse of development.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a need to increase the <\/span>pace of urbanisation in<\/span><\/b> the country. At the same time, the <\/span>influx of population<\/span><\/b> should not be concentrated in bigger cities only.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Smaller cities lying on the <\/span>periphery<\/span><\/b> of the <\/span>major industrial cities<\/span><\/b> should be primarily focussed from the point of <\/span>growth<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>investment potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, all the <\/span>backward cities <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>towns<\/span><\/b> should be given attention for investment and development.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
