{"id":187105,"date":"2022-05-30T20:46:53","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T15:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=187105"},"modified":"2022-05-30T20:46:53","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T15:16:53","slug":"explained-what-is-the-west-nile-virus-how-does-it-spread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-is-the-west-nile-virus-how-does-it-spread\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: What is the West Nile Virus, how does it spread?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kerala health department is on alert after the death of a 47-year-old from Thrissur due to the West Nile Virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is West Nile Virus?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne, single-stranded RNA virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a member of the<\/span> <b><i>flavivirus<\/i><\/b><b> genus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and belongs to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex of the family <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaviviridae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>First Case:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The virus was first isolated in a woman in the West Nile district of Uganda in 1937.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Currently, the virus is found commonly in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, North America, and West Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vector:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culex species of mosquitoes act as the principal vectors for transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source of Transmission: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is transmitted by infected mosquitoes between and among humans and animals, including birds, which are the reservoir host of the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also spread through blood transfusion, from an infected mother to her child, or through exposure to the virus in laboratories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To date, no human-to-human transmission of WNV through casual contact has been documented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The disease is asymptomatic in 80% of the infected people. The rest develop what is called the West Nile fever. In these 20% cases, the symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, nausea, rash and swollen glands. Severe infection can lead to encephalitis, meningitis, paralysis and even death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment often involves hospitalization, intravenous fluids, respiratory support and prevention of secondary infections.
