support for breastfeeding in health facilities has been recently released.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Background:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>12<sup>th<\/sup>, April, 2018: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF issued\u00a0new ten-step guidance\u00a0to increase support for breastfeeding in health facilities that provide maternity and newborn services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1991:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding strengthens the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (1991).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/baby-friendly-hospital-initiative-bfhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Know more about Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Importance of breastfeeding is as follows: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vital to a child\u2019s lifelong health,<\/li>\n<li>Protects newborn babies from infections,<\/li>\n<li>Reduces costs for health facilities, families, and governments,<\/li>\n<li>Improves IQ, school readiness and attendance,<\/li>\n<li>Associated with higher income in adult life,<\/li>\n<li>Reduces the risk of breast cancer in the mother,<\/li>\n<li>Partial breastfed or not breastfed at all leads to the risk of death due to diarrhoea and other infections, and<\/li>\n<li>Exclusive breastfeeding for six months\u00a0protects infant and mother against gastrointestinal infections and malnutrition, which are observed not only in developing but also industrialized countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Importance of policy for breastfeeding is as follows:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Requires a course of action and provides guidance,<\/li>\n<li>Helps establish consistent care for mothers and babies and<\/li>\n<li>Provides a standard that can be evaluated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>The policy should primarily include:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10 steps<\/strong> to successful breastfeeding,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Institutional ban<\/strong> on acceptance of free or low cost supplies of breast-milk substitutes, bottles, and teats and its distribution to mothers, and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Framework for assisting HIV positive mothers<\/strong> to make informed infant feeding decisions that meet their individual circumstances and then support for this decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are as follows: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Comply fully with the\u00a0<em>International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes<\/em>and relevant World Health Assembly resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>Have a written infant feeding policy that is routinely communicated to staff and parents.<\/li>\n<li>1c.\u00a0Establish the present monitoring and data-management systems.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that staff has sufficient knowledge, competence and skills to support breastfeeding.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the importance and management of breastfeeding with pregnant women and their families.<\/li>\n<li>Facilitate immediate and uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact and support mothers to initiate breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth.<\/li>\n<li>Support mothers to initiate and maintain breastfeeding and manage common difficulties.<\/li>\n<li>Do not provide breastfed newborns any food or fluids other than breast milk, unless medically indicated.<\/li>\n<li>Enable mothers and their infants to remain together and to practise rooming-in 24 hours a day.<\/li>\n<li>Support mothers to recognize and respond to their infants\u2019 cues for feeding.<\/li>\n<li>Counsel mothers on the use and risks of feeding bottles, teats and pacifiers.<\/li>\n<li>Coordinate discharge so that parents and their infants have timely access to ongoing support and care.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>India\u2019s programme to promote breastfeeding: MAA (Mothers Absolute Affection): <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMAA-Mother\u2019s Absolute Affection&#8217;\u2019 is a <strong>nationwide programme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is launched in an attempt to bring undiluted focus on <strong>promotion of breastfeeding and provision of counselling services <\/strong>for supporting breastfeeding through health systems.<\/li>\n<li>The programme has been named \u2018MAA\u2019 to signify the <strong>support a lactating mother requires<\/strong> from family members and at health facilities to breastfeed successfully.<\/li>\n<li>The chief components of the MAA Programme are:\n<ul>\n<li>Community awareness generation,<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening inter personal communication through ASHA,<\/li>\n<li>Skilled support for breastfeeding at Delivery points in Public health facilities, and<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring and Award\/recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Under this programme, ASHA has been incentivized for reaching out to pregnant and lactating mothers.<\/li>\n<li>They provide information on benefits and techniques of successful breastfeeding during interpersonal communication.<\/li>\n<li>ANMs at all sub-centres and health personnel at all delivery points are being trained for providing skilled support to mothers referred with issues related to breastfeeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Conclusion:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thus, religious implementation of the ten step guidance will significantly improve the much needed breastfeeding rates
