{"id":188107,"date":"2022-06-03T20:12:19","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T14:42:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=188107"},"modified":"2022-06-03T20:12:19","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T14:42:19","slug":"a-unique-liquid-mirror-telescope-sees-first-light-in-the-indian-himalayas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-unique-liquid-mirror-telescope-sees-first-light-in-the-indian-himalayas\/","title":{"rendered":"A Unique Liquid-Mirror Telescope sees first light in the Indian Himalayas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has commissioned an International Liquid Mirror Telescope(ILMT) in Devasthal, Uttarakhand.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the International Liquid Mirror Telescope(ILMT)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Built by: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stronomers from India, Belgium and Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located at an altitude of 2450 meters at the Devasthal Observatory campus of Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The telescope will help in surveying the sky, making it possible to observe several galaxies and other astronomical sources just by staring at the strip of sky that passes overhead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 For this, the telescope employs a 4-meter-diameter rotating mirror made up of a thin film of liquid mercury to collect and focus light.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Duration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ILMT will operate every night for five years and carry out daily imaging except between June and August monsoon months, as a precaution to protect the instruments from humid conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 It is the first liquid mirror telescope in the country and the largest in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ILMT will be the third telescope to be operating from Devasthal after the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-develops-low-cost-indigenous-spectrograph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3.6-metre Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT)<\/a> \u2014 the largest in India commissioned in 2016 \u2014 and the 1.3-metre Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT) inaugurated in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/trans-himalayan-region-becoming-one-of-the-promising-astronomical-sites-globally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trans- Himalayan region becoming one of the promising astronomical sites globally<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>A Unique Liquid-Mirror Telescope sees first light in the Indian Himalayas<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b>on<b> 2nd June 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
