Researchers have discovered the largest plant in the world named \u201cPosidonia Australis\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Posidonia Australis is also known<\/span>\u00a0as ribbon weed is a species of seagrass.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was discovered in the shallow waters of the World Heritage Area of Shark Bay in Western Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The plant is estimated to be at least 4,500 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

It stretches across 180 km in length. This makes it the largest known plant on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

The plant appears to be extremely resilient without successful flowering and seed production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is unique about this plant?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Firstly, <\/b>it covers an area of 20,000 hectares which makes it the largest known plant on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/b>The largest tree in India, the Great Banyan in Howrah\u2019s Botanical Garden, covers 1.41 hectares.<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, <\/b>this plant is unique from others as it has twice as many chromosomes as its relatives. This makes it what scientists call a \u201cpolyploid\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/b>: Polyploids instead of taking half-half genome from both parents, take 100% genome of each of their parents, something not unheard of in plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
