{"id":189417,"date":"2022-06-08T20:33:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-08T15:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=189417"},"modified":"2022-06-08T20:33:13","modified_gmt":"2022-06-08T15:03:13","slug":"kolkata-centuries-before-job-charnock-what-newly-excavated-finds-tell-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kolkata-centuries-before-job-charnock-what-newly-excavated-finds-tell-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Kolkata, centuries before Job Charnock: What newly excavated finds tell us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent excavations by the Kolkata Circle of the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) at a mound outside the Robert Clive House in Dum Dum have revealed evidence of settlements in Kolkata that can be almost 2,000 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings provided further evidence of human habitation in Kolkata from centuries before the time British administrator Job Charnock was said to have founded the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>About Kolkata<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kolkata with its grand colonial structures like Victoria Memorial, Town Hall, Metcalfe Hall, and St. John\u2019s Church is widely considered to be a colonial city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job Charnock, an English administrator who landed in the city in the mid-17th Century is considered the founder of the city as he took control of three villages Sutanuti, Gobindapur and Kalikata.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a 2003 judgment of the Calcutta High Court ruled that the English administrator cannot be called the \u201cfounder\u201d of Kolkata.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Why did the court rule that Charnock was not the founder of Kolkata City?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Court ruling is based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on a report from an academic committee. The committee found that a \u201chighly civilized society\u201d and \u201can important trading centre\u201d had existed on the site long before Charnock established his settlement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee also found that a place called Kalikatah was an important religious center adjacent to Kalighat village with its Kali temple. The site is mentioned in Bipradas Pipilai\u2019s Manasa Mangala (1495) and Abul Fazl\u2019s Ain-I-Akbari(1596).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, the excavations at Chandraketugarh about 25 km from the present demarcations of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kolkata had also provided some evidence in the 1950s and the 1960s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>About Clive House<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200bClive House is one of the oldest buildings in Kolkata.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is named after Robert Clive, the first British Governor of Bengal Presidency who used it as a country house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some records mention a treaty between Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah and Robert Clive in this building on February 6 or 9, 1757.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cKolkata, centuries before Job Charnock: What newly excavated finds tell us\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on <b>8th June 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
