{"id":189990,"date":"2022-06-11T20:52:51","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T15:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=189990"},"modified":"2023-04-29T14:57:01","modified_gmt":"2023-04-29T09:27:01","slug":"misery-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/misery-index\/","title":{"rendered":"Misery Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Misery index is a simple sum of a nation\u2019s annual inflation rate and its unemployment rate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The higher the index, the more the misery felt by average citizens.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The first Misery Index was constructed by economist Art Okun in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Index has been modified several times, first by Robert Barro of Harvard and then by Prof. Steve Hanke of Johns Hopkins University<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hanke\u2019s Misery Index is the sum of the unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates, minus the percentage change in real GDP per capita.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Misery Index: Current Status<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"p-content\">Misery is highest in the countries known for economic mismanagement and\/or congenital problems: <\/span><span class=\"p-content\">Turkey, Argentina, South Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>War effected countries like Russia, one of the BRICS economy Brazil and Pakistan, Egypt come next.<\/li>\n<li>India with 49th rank (2022)\u00a0 is doing better than US and UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Misery Index: Modified<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Two modifications were made to the misery index.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>One was to<strong> add the prevailing rate of interest<\/strong>. That makes the picture much worse for poorly-placed countries like Turkey, Brazil, Russia, and Pakistan since high inflation usually brings with it high interest rates.<\/li>\n<li>Second is to include <strong>per capita income growth rates<\/strong>, since these reduce economic hardship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Misery Index: Criticism<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Though it is easy to calculate but it is an imprecise reflection of the economy.<\/li>\n<li>It treats rise of unemployment and inflation equally. However, a 1% rise in unemployment is likely to cause more misery than 1% rise in inflation.<\/li>\n<li>It does not include key indicators of economy like economic growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"p-content\">Misery Index measurements capture only part of the full reality.
