{"id":189994,"date":"2022-06-11T20:45:07","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T15:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=189994"},"modified":"2022-06-11T20:46:18","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T15:16:18","slug":"asias-highland-do-better-than-thais-fully-decriminalise-marijuana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/asias-highland-do-better-than-thais-fully-decriminalise-marijuana\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia\u2019s highland: Do better than Thais, fully decriminalise marijuana"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: Thailand recently became the first Asian nation to decriminalize marijuana for medical and industrial use.<\/p>\n<h5>Details about Thailand&#8217;s move on Marijuana<\/h5>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s move means is that farmers will be able to grow the plant while entrepreneurs can sell cannabis-infused food, drinks and cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p>There are two caveats \u2013<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; smoking pot in public will still be outlawed<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; possession and sale of cannabis extracts containing more than 0.2% of its psychoactive ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), will not be allowed.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s part decriminalisation of marijuana is expected to fetch the industry as much as $435 million by 2026.<\/p>\n<h5>What is the situation in India wrt Marijuana?<\/h5>\n<p>India continues to stick to a grey area where only certain parts of the plant (bhang leaves) and certain uses (medical and scientific) are allowed.<\/p>\n<p>This system came about because India had given in to <strong>American pressure in the 1980s<\/strong> and banned all narcotic substances. But since then the US has reversed course and today 19 American states allow recreational marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it <strong>makes little sense to keep marijuana in the proscribed list<\/strong>, clog up courts by prosecuting low quantities of possession, drive the trade underground and eschew legitimate revenue.<\/p>\n<h5>Way forward<\/h5>\n<p>Before the ban, India had a centuries-old tradition of marijuana use as part of its culture.
