{"id":190048,"date":"2022-06-11T20:52:49","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T15:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=190048"},"modified":"2022-06-11T20:54:00","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T15:24:00","slug":"how-india-got-her-top-guns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/how-india-got-her-top-guns\/","title":{"rendered":"How India Got Her Top Guns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Context: <\/strong>In 1940\/50s Indian Air Force (IAF) undertook air combat tactics and training through <strong>the Royal Air Force.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Evolution of IAF Training<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In the post-independent India, The Indian Air Force (IAF) has sent pilots abroad (like the UK) to undergo the <strong>Pilot Attack Instructors (PAI) course<\/strong>. These pilots were required to pass on their knowledge to squadron pilots.<\/p>\n<p>Although, <strong>Maharajpur, Jamnagar, Bhopal, Amarda Road<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Cholavaran<\/strong> were established as centres. But, <strong>training courses<\/strong> like <strong>air to ground<\/strong> <strong>weapon delivery,<\/strong> <strong>air to air combat<\/strong> and <strong>tactics<\/strong> were continued to take place overseas.<\/p>\n<p>During the 1960s, no IAF Fighter Leader was trained for nearly 15 years, till 1972 due to <strong>lack of funds <\/strong>and <strong>approvals<\/strong> coupled with the 1962 and 1965 wars.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Measures Taken to develop tactics and training more suited to Indian needs <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Directorate of Offensive Operations was established to give a fillip to training and tactics in the IAF<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Tactics and Combat Development and Training Squadron (TCDTS)<\/strong> was set up as a one-year experiment. Initially, it was moved to Ambala. Later it was renamed as <strong>the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Further, the establishment was moved to Jamnagar. In 2000, TACDE was moved to <strong>Gwalior<\/strong> because the location was geographically better.<\/p>\n<p>The TCDTS has been given the task of conducting <strong>low-level night strikes<\/strong> on Pakistani Air Force (PAF) bases. Therefore, TCDTS has executed <strong>night-time raids <\/strong>at major PAF bases.<\/p>\n<p>In 1973, the course for the <strong>first Fighter Combat Leader (FCL<\/strong>) was started. It had three pilots each from <strong>MiGs<\/strong> and <strong>Sukhois fleets,<\/strong> who were all Flight Commanders of their various squadrons and qualified PAIs from the pre-TACDE era.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>PAI course<\/strong> was reintroduced at TACDE. It was instituted as a subset of the broader<strong> FCL Course.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Fighter Strike Leader<\/strong> and <strong>Master Fighter Controller<\/strong> courses were added in 1989.
