The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation<\/span> has released the<\/span> Periodic Labour Force Survey(PLFS) for 2020-21.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unemployment Rate: <\/b>The unemployment rate saw a decrease of 0.6% and fell to 4.2% in 2020-21 compared with 4.8% in 2019-20.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 This means that only 4.2% of adults who looked for jobs could not get any work in rural and urban areas of the country in 2020-21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Rural areas recorded an unemployment rate of 3.3% and urban areas recorded an unemployment rate of 6.7%.<\/span><\/p>\n

Labour Force Participation Rate(LFPR): <\/b>It <\/span>is defined as the section of the working population in the age group of 16-64 in the economy currently employed or seeking employment.It <\/span>was 41.6% during 2020-21 compared to 40.1% in the previous year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Worker-Population Ratio(WPR):<\/b> It is defined as the percentage of employed persons in the population.<\/span> It was <\/span>39.8% in 2020-21, an increase from 38.2% of the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Migrants<\/b>: Migrants are defined in the survey as a household members whose last usual place of residence, at any time in the past, was different from the present place of enumeration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 According to the survey, the migration rate is 28.9%. The migration rate among women was 48% and 47.8% in rural and urban areas respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/b>PLFS says that only 4.4% of migration happened due to employment which is a drastic reduction from the 10% in 2011. Hence, this report justifies the theory of large-scale reverse migration and job losses during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
