For example, the attitude like \u201c<strong>God made Adam and Eve; not Adam and Steve<\/strong>\u201d still lingers in Indian society.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is homophobia?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>George Weinberg, an American clinical psychologist, coined the term <strong>\u2018homophobia\u2019<\/strong> in his book\u00a0<strong><em>Society and the Healthy Homosexual<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(1972).<\/p>\n<p>Homophobia is defined as culturally produced fear of or prejudice against homosexuals. This can manifest into legal restrictions or, in extreme cases, <strong>bullying<\/strong> or even <strong>violence<\/strong> against <strong>homosexuals<\/strong>. It is a culturally conditioned response to homosexuality.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Argument against such homophobia<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The <strong>Indian Psychiatric Society<\/strong> authentically stated that <strong>homosexuality<\/strong> was not a <strong>mental disorder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>social<\/strong> and <strong>psychological abhorrence<\/strong> against the LGBTQ+ community nullifies the constitutional <strong>principles of fraternity<\/strong> and <strong>dignity,<\/strong> enshrined in the Indian Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>There are various historical figures or mythological characters who signalled towards queerness. For example, <strong>Shikhandi<\/strong> became a man to satisfy her wife; Mahadeva became a woman to deliver his devotee\u2019s child; and <strong>Chudala<\/strong> became a man to enlighten her husband.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In words of J.<strong>B. Kripalani,<\/strong> a prominent member of the Constituent Assembly, \u201cthe <strong>principle of fraternity<\/strong> means that <strong>we are all sons of the same God<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.. B.R. Ambedkar, elucidated the Indian roots of the ideal of fraternity. He derived the principle from the teachings of the Buddha. He gave the highest place to fraternity because this is the only real safeguard against the <strong>denial o<\/strong>f <strong>liberty<\/strong> or <strong>equality.<\/strong> He championed the ideal of fraternity to uphold the cause of the oppressed castes, Dalits.
