News<\/strong>: Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister was on a three-day visit to India in keeping with Iran\u2019s \u201cAsia-oriented\u201d foreign policy.<\/strong> It was the first ministerial-level visit from Iran since Ebrahim Raisi assumed the Iranian presidency.<\/p>\n

What is the convergence of interests between India-Iran?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The \u201cTehran Declaration<\/strong>\u201d between India and Iran affirmed the shared vision of the two countries for an \u201cequitable, pluralistic and co-operative international order<\/strong>\u201d. It symbolizes common geopolitical interests:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ex-Iranian President envisioned \u201cdialogue among civilisations<\/strong>\u201d as a paradigm of international relations <\/strong>based on principles of tolerance<\/strong>, pluralism<\/strong> and respect for diversity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

India sees Iran which borders the Persian G<\/strong>ulf and the Caspian Sea<\/strong>, as a land bridge <\/strong>to Central Asia and Eurasia which have seen emergence of independent landlocked countries<\/strong> over the last three decades.<\/p>\n

Some developments in the India-Iran Relationship<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Despite the US Sanctions, Iran, India, Russia and a few other countries in the Eurasian region, have continued to work on the multi-modal International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).<\/strong>
\nBoth countries have pledged to redouble their efforts to build the railway line between Iran\u2019s Caspian port of Rasht <\/strong>and Astara on the Iran-Azerbaijan border<\/strong>, aimed to connect the railway networks of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Chabahar<\/strong> port, which India is building, is also a story of perseverance in the ties between the two countries.<\/p>\n

In recent times, India has abstained on the resolution by the US and its allies to censure Iran at the IAEA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What are the challenges in India-Iran relationship?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The US sanctions on Iran and Tehran withdrawal<\/strong> from the nuclear deal in 2018<\/strong>, worsened the bilateral relations, especially in India\u2019s energy imports from Iran<\/p>\n

At present, India is strengthening its new partnerships<\/strong> within its regional vision <\/strong>centred on the Indo-Pacific<\/strong>. Whereas, Iran<\/strong> is deepening its relationship with China<\/strong> and Russia<\/strong> which have been playing aggressive geopolitical games in their own neighbourhood and also at the global level.<\/p>\n

The \u201csluggish\u201d pace of the port\u2019s development<\/strong>. Tehran has maintained that Chabahar<\/strong> does not seek to rival Pakistan\u2019s Gwadar port<\/strong> being developed by China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Pakistan has been leading the efforts to link Central Asia with Karachi through a trans-Afghan railway.<\/p>\n

Way Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n

New Delhi is pushing for integrating Chabahar into the 13-nation International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Recently, the maiden India-Central Asia summit<\/strong> agreed on creating a Joint Working Group on Chabahar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The revival of the US-Iran nuclear deal could give a fillip to India\u2019s economic ties<\/strong> with Iran. India\u2019s interests in continental Asia can be served with an improved bilateral relation<\/strong> with Iran.<\/p>\n
