News<\/strong>: Recently, an American school in Texas<\/strong> witnessed a horrific incident of mass shooting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

About the Childhood concept<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Cultural historians and demographers have demonstrated that childhood has been recognised as a social category<\/strong> not more than 300 years ago.<\/p>\n

Over this period, it has been recognised as a distinct stage of human life<\/strong> and has gained universal acceptance.<\/p>\n

The studies were conducted in disciplines such as psychology<\/strong>, linguistics<\/strong> and anthropology<\/strong> which asserted the importance of childhood<\/strong> as a distinct and prolonged stage of life in<\/strong> human society. It was not merely a biological stage of life.<\/strong> This new perspective gradually created a global consensus that child survival <\/strong>and welfare<\/strong> is important.<\/p>\n

Developments on the concept of childhood<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Every country formally recognized the children\u2019s rights<\/strong>. They brought changes in their policies.<\/p>\n

It was argued that children<\/strong> need protection<\/strong> throughout childhood<\/strong> extending from infancy<\/strong> to adolescence<\/strong> and early youth.<\/p>\n

As children can\u2019t be expected to assert their rights, the state<\/strong> and society<\/strong> must guarantee that these rights are not violated. This led to the emergence of the idea of collective responsibility <\/strong>for childhood protection.<\/p>\n

Situation at present<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Childhood protection from physical and psychological harm, which earlier received consensus from the family, the school and the state is no longer effective.<\/p>\n

What are the threats to childhood?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The threats<\/strong> range from issues of public health, universal schooling, protecting children from early death, use of children as cheap labour, induction into exploitative trade and violent conflicts.<\/p>\n

Although, considerable progress<\/strong> has taken place in many parts of the world<\/strong>. but the changes occurring in conditions surrounding children are pervasive and deep.<\/p>\n

The deep economic<\/strong> and cultural changes<\/strong> that are taking place around us are changing the life & the values related to children\u2019s life today. A long period that influenced parenthood<\/strong> and education<\/strong> is approaching its end.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s role as the custodian of children\u2019s rights<\/strong> has weakened. It has voluntarily withdrawn<\/strong> in order to create room for commercial interests<\/strong> directly addressing children.<\/p>\n

The state as well as the family is unable to provide some measures for protection<\/strong> around childhood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The new consortium of market forces<\/strong> has penetrated. The children are now seen as consumers and also as objects or commodities of consumption.<\/p>\n

Digital communication<\/strong> has created a condition that children can be approached without the knowledge of their guardians. They have been subject to oppression<\/strong> through the so-called social media platforms.<\/strong> They have exposure to violent videos, pornography<\/strong> and terrorising messages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, it has become a rare phenomenon to see children playing on the street<\/strong> or in park-like spaces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
