{"id":191539,"date":"2022-06-21T21:02:10","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T15:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=191539"},"modified":"2022-06-21T21:02:10","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T15:32:10","slug":"india-buys-more-coal-from-russia-and-urea-from-the-us-diversifying-supply-sources-is-good-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-buys-more-coal-from-russia-and-urea-from-the-us-diversifying-supply-sources-is-good-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"India buys more coal from Russia, and urea from the US \u2014 diversifying supply sources is good policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: India\u2019s imports of Russian coal in June are reportedly <strong>expected to be the highest<\/strong> in at least seven and a half years.<\/p>\n<p>This comes alongside <strong>Russia displacing Saudi Arabia to become India\u2019s second-largest oil supplier after Iraq<\/strong> in May.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of these are unwelcome developments, nor the fact that India has, for the first time, bought a large urea consignment from the US.<\/p>\n<h5>Why India&#8217;s trade with Russia has increased?<\/h5>\n<p>Russian traders are offering <strong>discounts of 25-30%<\/strong> for thermal coal and accepting payment in rupees. Hence, bulk purchases by Indian cement and steel companies have spiked in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diversifying supply sources and buying at the lowest price<\/strong> for equivalent quality is also in <strong>national interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> It has, likewise, become economical now to import urea from the US, which is quoting $55-75 per tonne cheaper than that from the Middle East, notwithstanding higher freight costs and longer voyage time.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s imports of crude petroleum, coal and finished fertilisers in 2021-22 have increased, as against the previous fiscal\u2019s corresponding levels. The country\u2019s merchandise trade deficit hit a record $190.71 billion in 2021-22.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> A further <strong>widening of its deficits<\/strong>, whether external or fiscal, and <strong>uncontrolled weakening of the rupee<\/strong>, both external and internal purchasing value, is something India cannot afford.<\/p>\n<p>If importing more coal and oil from Russia or urea from the US forces existing suppliers \u2014 the likes of Australia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates \u2014 to lower prices, it would <strong>aid in macroeconomic stability<\/strong> necessary for long-term growth.<\/p>\n<p>India and China purchasing more from Russia, also<strong> reduces the pressure on the international oil market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Imagine where crude prices would have reached had these two Asian countries not stepped up buying from Russia.<\/p>\n<h5>Way forward<\/h5>\n<p>The growing trade with Russia may not be to the West\u2019s liking.
