{"id":191568,"date":"2022-06-21T21:14:42","date_gmt":"2022-06-21T15:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=191568"},"modified":"2022-06-21T21:14:42","modified_gmt":"2022-06-21T15:44:42","slug":"spiny-horntail-rare-dragonfly-spotted-in-kerala-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/spiny-horntail-rare-dragonfly-spotted-in-kerala-for-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Spiny Horntail: Rare dragonfly spotted in Kerala for the first time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dragonfly enthusiasts have recorded the presence of a rare dragonfly species named \u201cSpiny Horntail\u201d that was not seen in Kerala until now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Spiny Horntail?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spiny Horntail (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burmagomphus chaukulensis)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a dragonfly species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This species is known to be endemic to the Western Ghats and was discovered in Maharashtra earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species differs from other <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burmagomphus species<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the markings on the lateral thorax and the peculiar shape of anal appendages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>About <\/b><b>Burmagomphus<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burmagomphus is a genus of dragonfly in the family Gomphidae.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to the finding of B.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chaukulensi, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burmagomphus was represented by three species \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B. cauvericus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B. pyramidalis and B. laidlawi.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B. laidlawi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is found throughout the Western Ghats, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B. cauvericus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more restricted in its distribution. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B. pyramidalis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is found in the Western Ghats as well as in Peninsular India .All other species of the genus are found in the Western and Eastern Himalayas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cRare dragonfly spotted in Kerala for the first time<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b>published in <b>The Hindu <\/b>on<b> 21st June 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
