Dragonfly enthusiasts have recorded the presence of a rare dragonfly species named \u201cSpiny Horntail\u201d that was not seen in Kerala until now.<\/span><\/p>\n Spiny Horntail (<\/span>Burmagomphus chaukulensis)<\/span><\/i> is a dragonfly species.<\/span><\/p>\n This species is known to be endemic to the Western Ghats and was discovered in Maharashtra earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n The species differs from other <\/span>Burmagomphus species<\/span><\/i> by the markings on the lateral thorax and the peculiar shape of anal appendages.<\/span><\/p>\n Burmagomphus is a genus of dragonfly in the family Gomphidae.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Prior to the finding of B.<\/span> chaukulensi, <\/span><\/i>Burmagomphus was represented by three species \u2013 <\/span>B. cauvericus<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>B. pyramidalis and B. laidlawi.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n While <\/span>B. laidlawi <\/span><\/i>is found throughout the Western Ghats, <\/span>B. cauvericus<\/span><\/i> is more restricted in its distribution. <\/span>B. pyramidalis<\/span><\/i> is found in the Western Ghats as well as in Peninsular India .All other species of the genus are found in the Western and Eastern Himalayas.<\/span><\/p>\n Source: <\/b>The post is based on the article <\/span>\u201cRare dragonfly spotted in Kerala for the first time<\/b>\u201d <\/b>published in The Hindu <\/b>on 21st June 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What is the News?
