News<\/strong>: It is reported that the NCERT is going to introduce sweeping changes in social science textbooks for Classes VI to XII. It will involve deletion and modification of certain contents of the NCERT books<\/p>\n

The NCERT\u2019s Rationale<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The changes are being introduced as a \u201crationalisation exercise\u201d.<\/strong> This is aimed to reduce the curriculum load<\/strong> to help students make a \u201cspeedy recovery\u201d <\/strong>in learning after the Covid-induced disruptions.<\/p>\n

What are the proposed changes?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

It will delete content related to chapters in history<\/strong> that have acquired political overtones<\/strong> under the current ruling establishment. For example, the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire.<\/p>\n

Some changes will be introduced in certain moments<\/strong> in India\u2019s recent political history. For example, the Emergency in 1975-77 and the communal violence in Gujarat 2002.<\/p>\n

What are the issues and concerns in this project?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Some of the revisions will impact the learning of the students related to the inequities of the caste system<\/strong> and the impact of social<\/strong> and protest movement<\/strong>s such as the Narmada Bachao Andolan.<\/p>\n

The proposed changes seem to be motivated by the urge to protect the<\/strong> authority<\/strong> of the state from questions, arguments and criticism. Therefore, it raises the questions on the political non-partisanship<\/strong> and autonomous functioning<\/strong> of the NCERT.<\/p>\n

It seems that the proposed changes aim to project the notion of a cohesive Hindu society<\/strong> through NCERT books\/.<\/p>\n

There is a lack of transparency<\/strong> in the functioning of the NCERT. For example, the name of the \u201cexternal experts\u201d has not been revealed in the public domain.<\/p>\n

The learning loss<\/strong> can be best recovered through classroom-level interventions,<\/strong> such as empowering teachers.<\/p>\n

The pandemic-related exigencies do not require making permanent deletions<\/strong> and attenuating the content of textbooks.<\/p>\n

The social scientists argue that the content<\/strong> which is proposed to be changed is important to encourage critical thinking <\/strong>of a complex understanding of social and political processes that took place in the past.<\/p>\n

It is the responsibility of a historian to depict a nuanced view of the past.<\/p>\n
