The Union Minister of Earth Sciences is participating in the \u201c2022 UN Ocean Conference\u201d in Lisbon, Portugal.<\/span><\/p>\n Co-Hosted by: <\/b>Governments of Kenya and Portugal<\/span><\/p>\n Aim: <\/b>To propel much-needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action.<\/span><\/p>\n Theme:<\/b> Scaling up Ocean Action Based on Science and Innovation for the Implementation of Goal 14<\/span>: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n The oceans cover 70% of the Earth\u2019s surface, are the planet’s largest biosphere and are home to up to 80% of all life in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It generates 50% of the oxygen human need, absorbs 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions and captures 90% of the additional heat generated from those emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is not just \u2018the lungs of the planet\u2019 but also its largest carbon sink – a vital buffer against the impacts of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n It was adopted in 2015.
