The meeting of the Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework failed to achieve as much as was expected.<\/span><\/p>\n The objective of the meeting was to reach a consensus on the text of the framework which is to be finalized at the 15th Conference of the Parties(CoP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD).<\/span><\/p>\n Aim:<\/b> To implement broad-based action to bring about a transformation in society\u2019s relationship with biodiversity ensuring that by 2050 the shared vision of \u2018living in harmony with nature is fulfilled.<\/span><\/p>\n The framework is built around a <\/span>theory of change<\/b> which recognizes that urgent policy action globally, regionally and nationally is required to transform economic, social and financial models.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 To halt the extinction and decline of biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 To enhance and retain nature\u2019s services to humans by conserving.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 To ensure fair and equitable benefits to all from the use of genetic resources.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 To close the gap between available financial and other means of implementation and those necessary to achieve the 2050 Vision.<\/span><\/p>\n The framework has 21 action-oriented targets for urgent action over the decade to 2030, which include:<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 To bring at least 30% of land and sea under the world\u2019s protected areas.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 A 50% greater reduction in the rate of introduction of invasive alien species<\/strong>, and controls or eradication of such species to eliminate or reduce their impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Reducing nutrients lost<\/strong> to the environment by at least half, and pesticides by at least two-thirds, and eliminating the discharge of plastic waste.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Nature-based contributions<\/strong> to global climate change mitigation efforts of at least 10 GtCO2e (gigatonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide) per year, and that all mitigation and adaptation efforts avoid negative impacts on biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 <\/span>A $200 billion increase in international financial flows<\/strong> from all sources to developing countries.<\/span><\/p>\n Source: <\/b>The post is based on the article<\/span> \u201c<\/b>Global Biodiversity Framework: What happened in Nairobi?<\/b>\u201d <\/b>published in <\/span>Down To Earth <\/b>on 27th June 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What is the News?
