It included <strong>a high-level dialogue <\/strong>on global development.<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/prime-minister-chairs-13th-brics-summit\/\"><strong>About the BRICS<\/strong><\/a><\/h5>\n<p>It was established to promote the <strong>global south cooperation mechanism. <\/strong>It was needed for both the strategic and economic purpose. For example, shielding from the domino effect of Western geo-economic compulsions and decisions.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Developments so far before 14<sup>th<\/sup> Summit<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Recently, the joint commission on space cooperation was formed for the BRICS nations, for advancing remote sensing and data sharing mechanisms between member states.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Various cooperation announcement made in the Summit<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Overall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Members will cooperate to <strong>strengthen<\/strong> and <strong>reform<\/strong> global governance. They will work in solidarity to combat Covid-19, safeguarding peace and security, promoting economic recovery, expediting implementation of the 2030 SDGs, deepening people-to-people exchanges, and promoting institutional development.<\/p>\n<p>Members have converging interests on <strong>critical issues<\/strong> such as counter-terrorism; trade; health; traditional medicine; environment; science technology and innovation; the reform of the multilateral system etc.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>India\u2019s Proposals<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>India proposed strengthening the BRICS Identity system, and creating an online database for BRICS\u00a0documents.<\/p>\n<p>India proposed establishment of a <strong>BRICS Railways Research Network<\/strong>, and strengthening cooperation between MSMEs to improve connectivity and supply chains between member states.<\/p>\n<p>India will hold a <strong>BRICS start-up <\/strong>event this year because India has become the <strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> largest start-up ecosystem <\/strong>in the world. Therefore, it is in the right position to lead a global South.<\/p>\n<p>India advocated for strengthening civil society organisations and think-tanks.<\/p>\n<p>India highlighted the significance of building <strong>people-to-people connect<\/strong> within BRICS, cooperation in the <strong>post-Covid global recovery<\/strong> etc..<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the friction points and challenges between BRICS members?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>At the summit, all <strong>five nations<\/strong> articulated their priorities, which indicates towards diverging national interests<\/p>\n<p>India highlighted the need for <strong>greater sensitivity<\/strong> among BRICS members to each other\u2019s security concerns, like terrorism. For example, China blocked the US-India joint move to list <strong>Pakistan-based terrorists<\/strong> as a global terrorist.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>post-Ukraine war phase<\/strong>, the <strong>global governance order <\/strong>has seen fracture.<\/p>\n<p>Both Russia and China want to rely on <strong>mechanisms<\/strong> which are <strong>outside the control of the West<\/strong>. This would lead to pressure on BRICS members to embrace the same newer mechanisms for global governance and finance.<\/p>\n<p>In recent G7 meetings, the western countries have indicated <strong>greater stringent sanction<\/strong>s to be imposed on Russia. This is expected to pose more challenges in free <strong>flow of trade<\/strong> and c<strong>ommerc<\/strong>e between BRICS member states.<\/p>\n<p>The probability of normalization of the <strong>China-India dispute <\/strong>since <strong>the Galwan crisis<\/strong> of 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Way Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are discussions on a <strong>possible expansion<\/strong> of BRICS.
