{"id":19325,"date":"2018-04-30T16:00:11","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T10:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=19325"},"modified":"2018-04-30T16:00:11","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T10:30:11","slug":"rural-electrification-an-overview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rural-electrification-an-overview\/","title":{"rendered":"Rural Electrification: An overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><b>28<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> of April 2018<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that all villages in the country have now access to electricity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Background: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Central Electricity Authority (CEA), a village is considered electrified only <\/span><b>if the Gram Panchayat certifies that<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> t<\/span><b>he basic infrastructure has been provided to the inhabited area, including Dalit hamlets, and 10% of the households are electrified.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last village to be brought on the national power grid was <\/span><b>Leisang village<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>Senapati<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> district of <\/span><b>Manipur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rural Electrification in India<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural electrification is considered to be the backbone of the rural economy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The electricity generation capacity in India is the <\/span><b>fifth largest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is the <\/span><b>sixth largest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consumer of electricity and accounts for <\/span><b>3.4 percent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the global energy consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rural electrification has five major facets:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting up of Rural Electricity Infrastructure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing connectivity to households<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adequate supply of desired quality of power<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supply of electricity at affordable rates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing clean, environmentally benign and sustainable power in efficient way. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rural Electrification provides for:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase in agriculture yield.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business of Small and household enterprises shall grow resulting into new avenues for employment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improvement in Health, Education, Banking (ATM) services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improvement in accessibility to radio, telephone, television, internet and mobile.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betterment in social security due to availability of electricity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessibility of electricity to schools, panchayats, hospitals and police stations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rural areas shall get increased opportunities for comprehensive development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Energy source and Percentage Share in installed capacity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thermal \u00a0&#8211; 64.75%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuclear \u00a0&#8211; 2.78%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydro &#8211; \u00a021.73%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other renewable energy sources &#8211; 10.73%<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Government initiative\/programme for Rural Electrification<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana \u2013\u201cSaubhagya\u201d<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2015.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DDUGJY is one of the flagship programmes of the Ministry of Power.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earlier scheme for rural electrification viz. Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) has been subsumed in Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Salient features of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide electrification to all villages. It will facilitate 24&#215;7 supply of power.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeder separation to ensure sufficient power to farmers and regular supply to other consumers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improvement of Sub-transmission and distribution network to improve the quality and reliability of the supply.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metering at all levels (input points, feeders and distribution transformers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micro grid and off grid distribution network &amp; Rural electrification- already sanctioned projects under RGGVY to be completed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana \u2013\u201cSaubhagya\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2017.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will provide the required financial assistance for strengthening and improvement of infrastructure in the power sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, or Saubhagya, to ensure electrification of all willing households in the country in rural as well as urban areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Salient features of Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana \u2013\u201cSaubhagya\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure electrification of all willing households in the country in rural as well as urban areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beneficiaries for free electricity connections would be identified using Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solar power packs of 200 to 300 WP with battery bank for un-electrified households located in remote and inaccessible areas, comprises of Five LED lights, One DC fan, One DC power plug. It also includes the Repair and Maintenance (R&amp;M) for 5 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The outcome of the Scheme is as follows:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental upgradation by substitution of Kerosene for lighting purposes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improvement education services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better health services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhanced connectivity through radio, television, mobiles, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased economic activities and jobs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved quality of life especially for women<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way forward<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to electricity is a cornerstone to the development of and essential for better quality of life for rural India.
