News:<\/strong> India has witnessed substantial divergence between the numbers of Covid-related deaths reported by Indian official sources <\/strong>and numbers cited by the World Health Organization<\/strong>. Therefore, due to such deviations, there is a need to look into the status of India\u2019s health care system.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adequacy in health care in India<\/strong><\/h5>\n

A number of studies have documented notable healthcare success in India. For example, the case of polio eradication.<\/p>\n

Shortcomings in health care in India.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Healthcare Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

India has failed to create adequate public<\/strong> and private health facilities<\/strong> across the country.<\/p>\n

The private health care services <\/strong>are non-affordable<\/strong> to less affluent sections of society. For example, it is difficult for a privately employed, earning around Rs 30,000 a month.<\/p>\n

In publicly-owned medical facilities<\/strong>, hospitalization is a time taking process, except for emergencies<\/strong> that arise due to road or other accidents. For instance, the waiting period for a hysterectomy operation<\/strong> in a government hospital is usually eight to nine months.<\/p>\n

In the Indian private hospitals<\/strong>, there is a lack of sufficiently professional diagnoses. In fact, experts\u2019 advice<\/strong> is largely driven by profit-making. For example,<\/strong> where a blockage in one of the heart arteries has been found in routine diagnosis, the cardiologist generally advises angioplasty<\/strong>, including installing one or more stents<\/strong> in addition to statin<\/strong> and blood thinner medication. <\/strong>However, as per a 2020 study by the US National Institute of Health<\/strong>, \u201cthere is no need for invasive procedures (read stents) in patients without symptoms\u201d. It is safe to begin treating the problem with medication and lifestyle change.<\/strong> If symptoms persist<\/strong>, then invasive treatment options<\/strong> can be discussed.<\/p>\n

Health Insurances<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The health insurance coverages provided in India are highly restrictive in nature. For instances,<\/p>\n

(1) any pre-existing ailments<\/strong> would be covered only after a waiting period of three years,<\/p>\n

(2) There is a two-year exclusion period<\/strong> for cataracts<\/strong>, hernia, hysterectomy, joint replacement, pregnancy, dental treatment, and external aids.<\/p>\n

(3) Further, congenital diseases and non-allopathic treatment are not covered at all.<\/p>\n

(4) Ayurvedic treatment, which is low-cost in nature, is found to be excluded.<\/p>\n

It is surprising that the Indian insurance regulator allows so many exceptions under private health insurance.<\/p>\n

Others problems<\/strong><\/h5>\n

There are issues of inadequate numbers of doctors-nurses in government hospitals.<\/p>\n
