A chip essentially comprises electronic circuits<\/strong> which are layered over a substrate made up of silicon.<\/p>\n

All chips have a basic mandate, either to store, transmit or process data at optimal speeds. In addition, they can also be used to accommodate the requirements of the devices they fit into.<\/p>\n

What are the processes in the making of Semiconductors Device?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The making involves a series of intense and complex processes. The making demands extreme precision and large capital investments.<\/p>\n

Fabless Phases (only design)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Semiconductor chips are first designed in R&D centres<\/strong> using specialized software-based Electronic Design<\/strong> and Automation<\/strong> tools.<\/p>\n

Foundry Phase (only fabrication) <\/strong><\/h5>\n

The Graphic Design System files containing the design are then transferred to a fab\/foundry<\/strong> to initiate the manufacturing process.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It involves the manufacturing of electronic circuits <\/strong>in a very specialized and highly controlled environment, possibly the cleanest places on earth.<\/p>\n

Specific operations are performed on the silicon wafer<\/strong> over the course of 2-3 months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Phase<\/strong><\/h5>\n

At a later stage, the products are subjected to testing, packaging, and assembly through Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT)<\/strong> companies. It is labor-intensive and a less capital-intensive process in manufacturing.<\/p>\n

Why is it important for India to become self-reliant in semiconductors?<\/strong><\/p>\n

These are used in memory chips<\/strong>, communication chips<\/strong>, logic chips,<\/strong> and sensor chips<\/strong> in the today\u2019s digitally interconnected world,<\/p>\n

It enabled schools, offices, and businesses to operate and remain functional, during the Covid pandemic when the whole world came to a standstill and the only way forward was digital.<\/p>\n

It also powered the supercomputers <\/strong>which enabled the rapid development of the Covid vaccine. Therefore, it has played an important role in the resumption of economic and social activities globally.<\/p>\n

It is the core of future technologies<\/strong> like AI, blockchain, 5G technologies, Yuval Noah Harari\u2019s Homo Deus\u2013 a mix of flesh and silicon \u2013 in the near future.<\/p>\n

India imported $54 billion of electronic goods<\/strong> in 2020. Most of the import was from China. The large-scale import dependence has a negative impact<\/strong> on India\u2019s balance of payments<\/strong>, forex, and strategic interests.<\/p>\n

It<\/strong> forms the bedrock of all ICT equipment. The indigenisation of the supply<\/strong> chain has positive implications across sectors like telecom, defense, space, internet surveillance, power, automobile, etc.<\/p>\n

In addition, there is a large indigenous market<\/strong> for semiconductors. For example, India\u2019s semiconductor consumption was $20 billion in 2020, and it is growing at a CAGR of 15%.<\/p>\n

The Way Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n

The success of Semicon India<\/strong> is fundamental to Make in India<\/strong> and Digital India<\/strong>. It is key for India\u2019s integration into the global value chain.<\/p>\n
