{"id":193436,"date":"2022-07-01T20:37:56","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T15:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=193436"},"modified":"2022-07-01T20:37:56","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T15:07:56","slug":"home-and-abroad-on-pm-modis-g-7-commitements-and-freedom-of-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/home-and-abroad-on-pm-modis-g-7-commitements-and-freedom-of-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Home and abroad: On PM Modi\u2019s G-7 commitements and freedom of speech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: PM of India attended the G7 annual summit meeting in Germany along with other special invitees from Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the deliberations took aim at the twin challenges seen from Russia and China.<\/p>\n<h5>What economic initiatives were discussed?<\/h5>\n<p>G7 countries discussed the following economic initiatives:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; the launch of a $600 billion U.S.-led Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; commitments on fighting climate change<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; funding renewable energy changes<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; mitigating inflation<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; managing the continued global crisis over the COVID-19 pandemic<\/p>\n<h5>What other issues were discussed at the meeting?<\/h5>\n<p><strong> Challenges to the international order<\/strong> that emanate from <strong>Moscow\u2019s war in Ukraine<\/strong> (including tightening sanctions, the impact on energy markets, and cybersecurity threats),<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beijing\u2019s \u201cexpansive maritime claims\u201d,<\/strong> rights violations, and unsustainable debt creation in lower income countries.<\/p>\n<p>The G-7 countries issued separate statements on support for Ukraine, food security and a \u2018<strong>Climate Club<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the G-7 and special invitee \u201cpartner countries\u201d issued a statement on \u201c<strong>Resilient Democracies<\/strong>\u201d, committing to free and fair elections, protecting freedom of expression, and gender empowerment.<\/p>\n<h5>What was India&#8217;s stand at the summit?<\/h5>\n<p>The Prime Minister of India made it clear that it is the <strong>developing world that needs the most support<\/strong>, including to weather the \u201cknock-on\u201d effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The Government sought to <strong>distance itself from the PGII,<\/strong> pitched as a G-7 counter to China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>India also made it evident that it had only signed on to the statements on \u201cResilient Democracies\u201d and a \u201cJust Energy Transition\u201d, and not the many statements castigating Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>India also stayed away from President Putin and President Xi\u2019s stringent criticism of the West.<\/p>\n<h5>Way forward<\/h5>\n<p>On the global stage, the G-7 outcomes mean New Delhi will have to continue to walk a tightrope between these two blocs that are growing more polarised and inimical towards each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>Home and abroad: On PM Modi\u2019s G-7 commitments and freedom of speech<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>The Hindu<\/strong> on <strong>1st Jul 22<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: PM of India attended the G7 annual summit meeting in Germany along with other special invitees from Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa.
