{"id":193519,"date":"2022-07-01T20:56:28","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T15:26:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=193519"},"modified":"2022-07-01T20:56:28","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T15:26:28","slug":"explained-what-is-isros-poem-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-what-is-isros-poem-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: What is ISRO\u2019s \u2018POEM\u2019 platform?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) PSLV-C53 rocket has successfully placed three Singaporean satellites into orbit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides placing these three Singaporean satellites in orbit, ISRO has also achieved the feat of successfully launching the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module or \u2018POEM\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is POEM?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PSLV Orbital Experimental Module is a platform that will help perform in-orbit experiments using the final and otherwise discarded stage of ISRO\u2019s workhorse rocket, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is PSLV and how was it used in PSLV-C53?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PSLV is a four-stage rocket where the first three spent stages fall back into the ocean, and the final stage (PS4) \u2014 after launching the satellite into orbit \u2014 ends up as space junk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in the PSLV-C53 mission, the spent final stage was utilized as a \u201cstabilized platform\u201d to perform experiments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the first time that the PS4 stage would orbit the earth as a stabilized platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How will ISRO keep POEM \u2018alive and stable\u2019 in orbit?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POEM has a dedicated Navigation Guidance and Control(NGC) system for attitude stabilization, which stands for controlling the orientation of any aerospace vehicle within permitted limits. The NGC will act as the platform\u2019s brain to stabilize it with specified accuracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">POEM will also derive its power from solar panels mounted around the PS4 tank and a Li-Ion battery. It will navigate using four sun sensors, a magnetometer, gyros &amp; NavIC.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Has ISRO repurposed and used PS4 rocket junk earlier?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISRO first demonstrated the capability of using PS4 as an orbital platform in 2019 with the PSLV-C44 mission that injected Microsat-R and Kalamsat-V2 satellites into their designated\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orbits.
