News<\/strong>: <\/span>The <\/span>GoI notified the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 in August last year. It prohibits <\/span>20 single-use plastic items <\/span><\/b>by<\/span> 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About the rules 2021<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Various single-use plastic items will be banned from 1 July 2022, including ubiquitous plastic cutleries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, <\/span>plastic carry bags<\/span><\/b> having a thickness of less than 120 microns will be banned from the end of December.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is plastic a cause of concern?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The CPCB had estimated that India generates around 9,200 metric tonnes of plastic waste daily. This is most likely a gross underestimation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tonnes of plastic waste is dumped at landfills or out into the open oceans. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They disintegrate into tiny microplastics and find their way into marine life or terrestrial animals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The microplastic eventually enters the <\/span>human food chain, <\/span><\/b>causing a lot of health problems\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether the nationwide single-use plastic ban beginning from today will be an effective counteraction<\/span><\/b>?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The scope of the ban is too small. Even the current efforts are unlikely to succeed in a meaningful way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem is that <\/span>alternatives<\/span><\/b> to everyday plastic items are far more expensive. For example, paper straws cost five times as much as plastic straws.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The single-use plastic ban is likely to hurt<\/span> small vendors <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>manufacturers <\/span><\/b>disproportionately.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, inflation levels are very high, therefore, the users might breach the ban.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What should be done?<\/h5>\n

The government should work with the <\/span>plastic industry<\/span><\/b> to foster innovation and boost the production of <\/span>compostable plastics.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The GOI should support the creation of an entire w<\/strong><\/span>aste management system<\/span><\/b> around compostable plastics. It should start from labelling to setting up <\/span>industrial composting units.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
