What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The Government of India has decided to promote the cultivation of dragon fruit, known as a \u201csuper fruit\u201d for its health benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, Dragon fruit is cultivated in 3,000 hectares.The plan is to increase cultivation to 50,000 hectares in five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Dragon Fruit?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Dragon Fruit<\/b> is the fruit of a species of wild cactus indigenous to South and Central America, where it is called pitaya or pitahaya.<\/span><\/p>\n

Climatic Condition:<\/b> Dragon Fruit <\/span>grows in all kinds of soil, and does not require much water. The plant doesn\u2019t need productive land as it can give maximum production from non-productive, less fertile areas also.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/b>: All the States in India except cold areas are suitable for dragon fruit cultivation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Largest Producer:<\/b> The world\u2019s largest producer and exporter of dragon fruit is Vietnam. The Vietnamese call it \u201cThanh long\u201d which translates to \u201cdragon\u2019s eyes\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 In India, Mizoram tops among the States that cultivate Dragon Fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benefits of Dragon Fruit: <\/b>Dragon fruit is considered to be one of the tropical superfoods due to its nutrient richness. It is rich in nutrients and low in calories. It is believed to help in the control of chronic illnesses, improve the health of the alimentary canal and boost the body\u2019s immunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steps taken by State Governments to promote Dragon Fruit:<\/b> Gujarat Government recently renamed dragon fruit as kamlam<\/a> (lotus) and announced an incentive for farmers who cultivate it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
