{"id":195781,"date":"2022-07-15T19:49:46","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T14:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=195781"},"modified":"2022-07-15T19:49:46","modified_gmt":"2022-07-15T14:19:46","slug":"data-democracy-who-bats-for-passing-on-genomics-tech-to-developing-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/data-democracy-who-bats-for-passing-on-genomics-tech-to-developing-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Data democracy: WHO bats for passing on genomics tech to developing world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cData democracy: WHO bats for passing on genomics tech to developing world\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> Down To Earth <\/b>on<b> 13th July 2022<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO Science Council has released a report \u201cAccelerating access to genomics for global health\u201d advocating for passing on Genomic Technologies to developing countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Genomics?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genomics is the study of all of a person&#8217;s genes (the genome), including interactions of those genes with each other and with the person&#8217;s environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200bThe field of genomics uses biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology methods to understand and use biological information in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What does the report say on Genomics?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to genomic technologies needs to be expanded, especially for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not ethically or scientifically justifiable for countries with fewer resources to gain late access to such technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortfalls in the financing, laboratory infrastructure, materials and highly trained personnel need to be addressed to expand access to genomic technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the recommendations given by the report?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote the adoption or expanded use of genomics in all Member States through advocacy by many parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify and overcome the practical issues that impede the implementation of genomics through local planning, financing, training of essential personnel, and the provision of instruments, materials, and computational infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster commitments to collaborative activities to promote all aspects of national and regional programmes that advance genomics in the Member States.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the WHO<\/b><b> Science Council?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established in April 2021 by WHO Director.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is composed of 9 leading scientists and public health experts from around the world.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The council advises the Director on high-priority issues and advances in science and technology that could directly improve global health.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It identified genomics as the focus of its first study, given the significant implications for public health.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cData democracy: WHO bats for passing on genomics tech to developing world\u201d published in Down To Earth on 13th July 2022 What is the News?
