AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When an individual becomes infected with these microbes, the infection is said to be resistant to antimicrobial medicines. They reduce the incidence of both resistant and susceptible infections, thereby also decreasing antibiotic consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What does the report say on current vaccine development against AMR?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report identifies 61 vaccine candidates in various stages of clinical development to address AMR diseases. However, the report cautions that most will not be available anytime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are vaccines available against four priority bacterial pathogens: <\/span><b>1)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pneumococcal disease (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcus pneumonia), <\/span><\/i><b>2)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hib <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Haemophilus influenzae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> type b), <\/span><b>3)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tuberculosis <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Mycobacterium tuberculosis)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>4) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhoid fever (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salmonella <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typhi).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the current Bacillus Calmette-Gu\u00e9rin (BCG) vaccines against tuberculosis (TB) do not adequately protect against TB.
