Out of which, 77% of the victims died outside healthcare facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of snakebites are reported in India between June and September. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 58% of the victims are said to be farmers and labourers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How is antivenom derived in India?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The antivenom is derived from the \u201cBig Four\u201d snakes in India namely Russell\u2019s viper, Common Krait, Indian Cobra and Saw-scaled viper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, 80% of all polyvalent antivenom derived in India comes from snakes caught in one district of Tamil Nadu which fails to address the diversity of venoms across the species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, the venom from monocled cobra from West Bengal contains mostly neurotoxins while the same species from Arunachal Pradesh had cytotoxins in its venom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurotoxin is a poison that acts on the nervous system. Cytotoxins kill the cells in a body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What does the study say on Green Pit Viper?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reen pit viper is not more lethal than Russell\u2019s viper, but the hemotoxic venom it injects prevents the blood in the body from clotting resulting in internal bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antivenom available in India cannot counter the venom of the green pit viper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Suggestions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Experts have \u200b\u200bcalled for developing a range of antivenoms that can do what the Big four-snake concoction cannot. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cBe specially chary of green pit vipers\u201d published in The Hindu on 17th July 2022.
