{"id":196261,"date":"2022-07-19T04:00:16","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T22:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=196261"},"modified":"2022-07-20T10:01:56","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T04:31:56","slug":"scientists-solve-the-curious-case-of-himalayan-glaciers-resisting-global-warming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/scientists-solve-the-curious-case-of-himalayan-glaciers-resisting-global-warming\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists solve the curious case of Himalayan glaciers resisting global warming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201c<\/b><b>Scientists solve the curious case of Himalayan glaciers resisting global warming<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>PIB <\/b>on<b> 18th July 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have made great progress in finding out why a few areas of glaciers in the Karakoram Range are defying the global trend of glaciers losing mass and resisting glacial melt caused by climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Background<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Himalayan glaciers are of utmost importance, particularly for the millions of people who live downstream and depend on these perennial rivers for their daily water demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, under the effects of global warming, they are rapidly disappearing and in the ensuing decades, suffocating demand on the water supplies is unavoidable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the glaciers in central Karakoram have surprisingly remained the same or even slightly risen during the past few decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behaviour seems to be confined to a very small region with only the Kunlun ranges being another example of showing similar trends in the whole Himalayas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How have glaciers in the Karakoram range remained the same?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have claimed that the <\/span><b>recent revival of western disturbance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been instrumental in triggering and sustaining <\/span><b>\u2018Karakoram Anomaly\u2019.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study has found that Western Disturbances are the primary feeder of snowfall for the Karakoram region during winters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, WDs constitute about around 65% of the total seasonal snowfall volume and about 53% of the total seasonal precipitation, easily making them the most important source of moisture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the precipitation intensity of WDs impacting Karakoram has increased by around 10% in the last two decades which only enhances their role in sustaining the regional anomaly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of this study?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previous studies have highlighted the role of temperature in establishing and sustaining the anomaly over the years.
