{"id":196272,"date":"2022-07-19T19:06:07","date_gmt":"2022-07-19T13:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=196272"},"modified":"2022-07-19T19:06:07","modified_gmt":"2022-07-19T13:36:07","slug":"only-50-farmers-benefited-from-farm-loan-waivers-finds-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/only-50-farmers-benefited-from-farm-loan-waivers-finds-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Only 50% farmers benefited from farm loan waivers, finds study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cOnly 50% farmers benefited from farm loan waivers, finds study\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> The Hindu <\/b>on<b> 18th July 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Bank of India\u2019s researchers have conducted a study on the Farm Loan Waivers Scheme announced by different states.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the key findings of the study?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Implementation of Farm Loan Waiver Scheme by States: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only about half of the intended beneficiaries of farm loan waivers announced by nine States since 2014 have actually received debt write-offs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poorest implementation of farm loan waiver schemes in terms of proportion of eligible farmers who had received the announced benefits were in Telangana (5%), Madhya Pradesh (12%), Jharkhand(13%), Punjab(24%), Karnataka(38%) and Uttar Pradesh (52%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 On the other hand, farm loan waivers implemented by Chhattisgarh in 2018 and Maharashtra in 2020 were received by 100% and 91% of the eligible farmers respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reasons for Poor Implementation of Farm Loan Waiver Scheme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The report identified rejection of farmers&#8217; claims by State Governments, limited or low fiscal space to meet promises and change in Governments in subsequent years as the possible reasons for the low implementation rate of these loan waivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Concerns with Loan Waiver Scheme: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report, loan waivers destroy the credit culture which may harm the farmers&#8217; interest in the medium to long term and also squeeze the fiscal space of governments to increase productive investment in agriculture infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cOnly 50% farmers benefited from farm loan waivers, finds study\u201d published in The Hindu on 18th July 2022.
