News<\/span><\/b>: Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared monkeypox a <\/span>global health emergency<\/span><\/b>. It is a signal to India to really scale up its response.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Globally, nearly 18,000 cases of <\/span>monkeypox<\/span><\/b> have been detected. In India, 4 cases have been detected<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The US has ordered nearly <\/span>7 million doses<\/span><\/b> of the <\/span>Jynneos vaccine<\/span><\/b> for delivery in 2022 and 2023.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Measures that can be taken by India<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

At present, the government should implement <\/span>prevention<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>treatment strategies.<\/span><\/b> Because in the future, the draconian lockdowns, movement curbs or alarmism can cause a lot of disorder.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>community disease surveillance<\/span><\/b> initiative must be initiated. The Healthcare workers should be in position to get reports of patients manifesting <\/span>chickenpox-like symptoms<\/span><\/b> because the monkeypox can be overlooked as chickenpox.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>test-trace-isolate-treat-vaccinate strategy<\/span><\/b> must be adopted. It refers to <\/span>quarantining<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>contact tracing<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>testing<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>ring vaccination<\/span><\/b> for individuals who are at risk.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Initially, all the medical workers can be vaccinated with<\/span> the smallpox vaccine<\/span><\/b>. It gives broad spectrum protection against monkeypox too, as per reports.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What should be done?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The Indian government must start negotiations for getting a <\/span>manufacturing licence<\/span><\/b> for the vaccine.\u00a0 Further, the government should place <\/span>bulk orders<\/span><\/b> and make<\/span> advance payments<\/span><\/b> to incentivise vaccine companies to scale up production.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Centre and states must reform their <\/span>communication strategies<\/span><\/b> so that mis-information do not prevail among the people across the country. <\/span>For example<\/span><\/b>, informing people about the best practice to protect themselves, like wearing of mask in case of Covid.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The agencies should work to assure the <\/span>dignity<\/span><\/b> of the patients. A lot of symptomatic persons did not approach health workers during the covid pandemic, due to the stigma attached to contracting Covid. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
