{"id":197357,"date":"2022-07-26T18:30:01","date_gmt":"2022-07-26T13:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=197357"},"modified":"2022-07-26T18:30:01","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T13:00:01","slug":"n-treat-technology-explained-how-iit-bombay-will-help-treat-mumbais-sewage-with-new-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/n-treat-technology-explained-how-iit-bombay-will-help-treat-mumbais-sewage-with-new-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"N-Treat technology: Explained: How IIT-Bombay will help treat Mumbai\u2019s sewage with new tech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cExplained: How IIT-Bombay will help treat Mumbai\u2019s sewage with new tech\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in<\/span><b> Indian Express <\/b>on<b> 25th July 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) has planned in-situ treatment of sewage from the drains to prevent sludge and sewage from water drains flowing into the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This in-situ treatment will be done with the help of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay\u2019s (IIT-B) N-Treat Technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is N-Treat technology?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N-Treat is a seven-stage process for waste treatment that uses screens, gates, silt traps, curtains of coconut fibres for filtration, and disinfection using sodium hypochlorite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the seven stages in the process?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>First stage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It involves screening to prevent the entry of floating objects such as plastic cups, paper dishes, polythene bags, sanitary napkins, or wood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Second stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It has proposed the construction of a silt trap which creates an inclination and \u2018parking spot\u2019 on the bed for sedimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Next three stages: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the installation of \u2018bio zones\u2019 in the form of coconut fibre curtains that will act as filters and promote the growth of biofilm to help in the decomposition of organic matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sixth stage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It proposes a floating wetland with aquatic vegetation planted on floating mats. In the floating wetlands, plants acquire nutrition directly from the water column for their growth and development, thus reducing the organic as well as inorganic pollutants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Final stage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It will include disinfection using sodium hypochlorite to kill the bacteria in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the advantages of this technology?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Firstly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is a natural and environmentally friendly way for sewage treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its setup takes place within the nullah channels, that is through the in-situ or on-site method of treatment and does not require additional space.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cExplained: How IIT-Bombay will help treat Mumbai\u2019s sewage with new tech\u201d published in Indian Express on 25th July 2022.
