Researchers <\/span>have recorded the sighting of a light-mantled albatross (Phoebetria palpebrata) in Tamil Nadu\u2019s Rameswaram.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where was the <\/b>Light-mantled Albatross spotted?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Light-mantled Albatross <\/span>was spotted on Anthoniyarpuram Beach. This spot is<\/span> part of the Palk Bay and near the Gulf of Mannar, an \u2018Important Bird Area\u2019 on India\u2019s southeast coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the first time that the bird \u2013 a native of Antarctica — was being spotted on the Asian continent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why was it spotted here? <\/b><\/h5>\n

As the nearest recorded site of the bird is around 5,000 km away from Rameswaram, the researchers feel a change in atmospheric pressure could have been among the reasons for the Albatross to land on an Indian shore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Characteristics: <\/b>They maintain a circumpolar distribution in the Southern Ocean mainly south of the sub-Antarctic convergence.<\/span><\/p>\n
