reimpose the sanctions against Iran.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The Timeline of Iran Nuclear Deal:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1967-<\/strong> Iran received technical assistance for nuclear technology under the US <strong><em>Atoms for Peace<\/em><\/strong> Programme<\/li>\n<li><strong>1979<\/strong>&#8211; Assistance ended with Iranian Revolution ( Islamic revolution which over threw Pahlavi Dynasty) JWatch the movie Argo directed by Ben Affleck<\/li>\n<li><strong>1984<\/strong>&#8211; Iran- Iraq War prompted Iran to restart nuclear programme<\/li>\n<li><strong>1992-<\/strong> US Central Intelligence Agency warned that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2002-2015<\/strong>&#8211; UN and USA and EU put Economic sanctions on Iran<\/li>\n<li><strong>2003 <\/strong>\u2013 Initial negotiation by E3 countries<\/li>\n<li><strong>2015<\/strong>&#8211; Iran Nuclear deal signed by P5 + 1 and Iran<\/li>\n<li><strong>2016-<\/strong> All nuclear related sanctions on Iran lifted<\/li>\n<li><strong>2017<\/strong>&#8211;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>US imposed sanctions on individuals and companies linked to Iran\u2019s Ballistic Missile Programme.<\/li>\n<li>US decertifies Iran\u2019s compliance to the deal (According to Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA), 2015, the US President must certify Iran\u2019s compliance with the deal in every 90days)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>What is Iran Nuclear Deal?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Formally known as the <strong>Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),<\/strong> the nuclear deal was announced in <strong>2015<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The deal was signed between Iran and the P5+1 group (US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany)<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>It restricts Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme, in return for lifting most of the economic sanctions of against it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Key Provisions of the Nuclear deal: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Limits on uranium enrichment<\/li>\n<li>Limits on number of nuclear centrifuges (centrifuge is a device used to enrich uranium)<\/li>\n<li>Restrictions on plutonium enrichment- Stopping Iran from operating at Arak nuclear site which was used to make plutonium<\/li>\n<li>The deal increased the breakout time to 1 year<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>Breakout time<\/em><\/strong> is the time it would take Iran to produce enough bomb-grade material for a single nuclear weapon<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Allowing <strong>International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/strong> for inspections.<\/li>\n<li>In return <u>Sanctions relief<\/u>: i.e. <u>l<\/u>ift all US and EU economic and energy sanctions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Imp Note:<\/strong> The deal <strong>does not<\/strong> cover Iran\u2019s Ballistic Missile programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>US Withdrawal from Iran Deal and Reactions:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran is complying with its obligations under the Nuclear Deal, however USA has decided to withdraw from the deal citing the following reasons:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>The JCPOA fails to deal with the threat of Iran&#8217;s missile programme<\/li>\n<li>The deal does not include strong mechanisms for inspections and verification.<\/li>\n<li>Israel is also vehemently opposed the deal<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>France, Germany, UK, China, Russia and European Union announced that they remain committed to the deal<\/li>\n<li>Israel and Saudi Arabia have welcomed US decision<\/li>\n<li>Iran announced that it remains committed to the deal but may resume uranium enrichment if the accord no longer offers benefits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Pictorial \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Implications of United States\u2019 withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> International trade\/business<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Trump&#8217;s announcement to impose <strong>&#8216;secondary sanctions&#8217;<\/strong> would hinder international companies to continue working in Iran due to potential consequences for their US business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>What are secondary sanctions?<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0 Those which put pressure on third parties to stop their activities with the sanctioned country by threatening to block third party&#8217;s access to the sanctioning country<strong>. <\/strong>These sanctions against Iran block foreign companies to access US market unless they comply with the sanctions against Iran<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Energy sector\/oil prices<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>US sanctions would decrease Iran\u2019s oil exports and put pressure on global markets consequently increasing oil prices<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Nuclear Risks:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Threat of Iran restarting its nuclear program<\/li>\n<li>It will hamper denuclearization efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Impact on West Asia:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Sanction will adversely affect Iran&#8217;s economy<\/li>\n<li>The collapse of the deal would aggravate the instability in West Asia<\/li>\n<li>If Iran resumes it nuclear programme, both Saudi Arabia and Israel are expected to Germany<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Impact on India: (Most important from UPSC mains perspective):<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Oil Prices:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Presently, Iran is India\u2019s third largest oil supplier. Oil prices are expected to increase after US sanctions on Iran. Any increase in oil prices would increase inflation levels in India and result in fall in the value of rupee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Chabahar Port:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India may have to reduce its investments in Chabahar port in order to restrict repercussions from USA. This would hinder India\u2019s strategic access to Afghanistan and Central Asia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ratified in 2002, INSTC is a multi-mode network connecting India, Russia, Iran, Europe and Central Asia.<\/li>\n<li>Plans for INSTC gained momentum after the JCPOA was signed in 2015 and sanctions on Iran were lifted<\/li>\n<li>Countries along the route or banking and insurance companies dealing with the INSTC plan\u00a0would be adversely affected by the reimposed US sanctions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>India- West Asia:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India shares diplomatic relations with Iran, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
