{"id":198196,"date":"2022-08-01T18:34:21","date_gmt":"2022-08-01T13:04:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=198196"},"modified":"2022-08-01T18:34:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T13:04:21","slug":"depletion-in-groundwater-levels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/depletion-in-groundwater-levels\/","title":{"rendered":"Depletion in Groundwater Levels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Depletion in Groundwater Levels<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b>on<b> 31st July 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the analysis done by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Groundwater levels in some parts of the country are declining.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the status of Groundwater levels in India?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CGWB has found that between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2011 and 2020, about 70% of wells have registered a rise in water level whereas about 30% of the wells monitored have registered a decline in groundwater level mostly in the range of 0\u20132 m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reasons for Groundwater Depletion:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ontinuous withdrawal is necessitated by increased demand for freshwater for various uses, unpredictability in rainfall, increased population, industrialization &amp; urbanization etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Water being a State subject, sustainable groundwater management including initiating suitable action for effective rainwater harvesting, increasing water use efficiency etc falls under the state\u2019s mandate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the steps taken to tackle the depletion of Groundwater in India?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/atal-bhujal-yojana\/\"><b>Atal Bhujal Yojana<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/mission-amrit-sarovar-a-high-level-meeting-held-to-review-the-progress-of-the-mission-under-the-chairmanship-of-secretary-rural-development\/\"><b>Mission Amrit Sarovar<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Guidelines for groundwater regulation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guidelines advise States for reviewing the free\/subsidized electricity policy to farmers (wherever applicable), bringing suitable water pricing policy and work towards crop rotation\/diversification\/other initiatives to reduce over-dependence on groundwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kurukshetra-july-summary-jal-shakti-abhiyan-and-traditional-knowledge-in-water-conservation-explained-pointwise\/\"><b>Jal Shakti Abhiyan(JSA)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-aquifer-mapping-and-management-programmenaquim\/\"><b>National Aquifer Mapping and Management Programme(NAQUIM)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>States Initiatives: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of states have done notable work in the field of water conservation \/harvesting such as 1) Mukhyamantri Jal Swavlamban Abhiyan in Rajasthan, 2) Jalyukt Shiba in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maharashtra, 3) Sujalam Sufalam Abhiyan in Gujarat, 4) Mission Kakatiya in Telangana, 5) Neeru Chettu in Andhra Pradesh, 6) Jal Jeevan Hariyali in Bihar, 7) Jal Hi Jeevan in Haryana and 8) Kudimaramath scheme in Tamil Nadu etc.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cDepletion in Groundwater Levels\u201d published in PIB on 31st July 2022.
