What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The Government is implementing the National <\/span>Leprosy<\/span><\/a> Eradication Programme (NLEP) with the goal of making India leprosy free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the National Leprosy Eradication Programme(NLEP)?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Nodal Ministry: <\/b>Ministry of Health and Family Welfare<\/span><\/p>\n

Type: <\/b>Centrally Sponsored Scheme<\/span><\/p>\n

Nodal Mission: <\/b>National Health Mission(NHM)<\/span><\/p>\n

Aim: <\/b>To detect the cases of leprosy at an early stage and to provide complete treatment, free of cost in order to prevent the occurrence of disability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Major Initiatives under the mission<\/b><\/h6>\n

\u2013 Leprosy Case Detection Campaign(LCDC) in high endemic districts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Leprosy Awareness Campaign on 30th January every year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013<\/span> NIKUSTH <\/b>– A real-time leprosy reporting software implemented across India.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Strengthening of Disability Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation (DPMR) services.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Certificates, awards and performance-linked financial incentives are given to the districts for achieving leprosy elimination.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Contact tracing is done and Post Exposure Prophylaxis(PEP) with a Single dose of Rifampicin (SDR) is given to the eligible contacts of the index case in order to interrupt the chain of transmission.<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u2019s achievements in Leprosy eradication<\/b><\/h5>\n

India has achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem as per WHO criteria of less than 1 case per 10,000 population at the National level in 2005.
