News<\/strong>: Recently, it came to the notice of the Indian government that a Chinese military vessel, the Yuan Wang 5, was scheduled to arrive at Hambantota Port<\/strong> on August 11. It had to stay over for a week. The Sri Lankan government attempted to show it<\/strong> off as a \u201cresearch vessel<\/strong>\u201d on an innocuous refuelling stop.<\/p>\n

About the Chinese Vessel – China\u2019s Yuan Wang:\u00a0<\/strong>This is a strategic platform that forms a part of the People\u2019s Liberation Army support force. It is used for surveillance.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s Response to the vessel:\u00a0<\/strong>Delhi has raised serious security concerns with respect to Sri Lanka\u2019s move, allowing Chinese vessels.<\/p>\n

Sri Lanka\u2019s Response: <\/strong>After a tense week of negotiations between the two South Asian neighbours, Sri Lanka has \u201cdeferred the arrival of Chinese vessels until further consultations are made on this matter\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What are the possible threats to Indian interests? <\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the second time in 19 months that Colombo has tried to make light of India\u2019s security concerns <\/strong>on account of the Chinese presence in Sri Lanka. For example,<\/strong> In January 2021, the Sri Lankan government awarded a renewable energy project<\/strong> on three islands close to the Tamil Nadu Coastline, to a Chinese firm. However, Sri Lanka deferred the project after much diplomatic energy on India\u2019s part, and a commitment to developing the same project through a grant.<\/p>\n

Sri Lanka and other India\u2019s entire neighborhood<\/strong> countries like the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan are facing a crisis. This may impact India adversely.<\/p>\n

What can be its implications for India-Sri Lanka relations?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sri Lanks cannot play a China vs India game on its soil without getting hurt itself.<\/p>\n

India has been giving massive assistance<\/strong> to Sri Lanka in its time of economic crisis. Colombo may lose Delhi\u2019s goodwill if it continues to ignore India\u2019s real security concerns <\/strong>in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
