Where would I get the content from? How would I frame the argument? My friends who had appeared in CSE before dismissed these doubts as trivial saying that it is one of the easiest paper in CSE which require least preparation compared to the marks you get.<\/p>\n<p>In the hindsight I would say they were partly correct.<\/p>\n<p>For any UPSC aspirant content is not an issue at all. What one study in GS is actually fodder for essay. The challenge here is to recall those ideas in first 20 minutes and frame a coherent and sensible argument. And this demands\u00a0<span class=\"skimlinks-unlinked\">practice.But<\/span>\u00a0this can only take you so far. Once you get a hang of writing 1000 words on a topic you should start working on structuring your content, getting innovative ideas into your essay, giving a broad perspective to a topic, using quotes and anecdotes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I used to choose a topic which has lots of dimensions to it. Usually this was the topic on which most people were going to write a essay. While there are advocates of choosing a non mainstream topic, it has inherent risk of backfiring. So I would suggest stick to the popular topic.<\/li>\n<li>Then I use to list down the random keywords and ideas that use to come to my mind as i start thinking on the topic.<\/li>\n<li>After 5 minutes I will write the questions that I want to answer in my essay- 5\/6 of them \u2013 this gives structure to your content<\/li>\n<li>Now for next 10 mins I use to connect my ideas with the questions. I would try to recall any quotes, data points, anecdotes, movies, books, authors, philosophers, leaders that I could relate with the topic<\/li>\n<li>In this time I also use to frame a coherent argument along with a decent Introduction and conclusion<\/li>\n<li>Introduction\n<ul>\n<li>Hook \u2013 something catchy \u2013 a quote, data point, short story which catches attention<\/li>\n<li>thesis \u2013 Brief outline of your argument<\/li>\n<li>Background \u2013 you can give a historical perspective of the issue or define the topic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use of rhetorical questions \u2013 at times as they help in giving a structure to the essay.<\/li>\n<li>Use of headings \u2013 not more than 3 in an essay, Your essay should look like a editorial in the Hindu<\/li>\n<li>Use of diagrams \u2013 I am not in favour. An essay is test of your language and writing skills in my opinion.<\/li>\n<li>Dimensions\n<ul>\n<li>SPECLIH \u2013 Social (Education, Health, Women, Children, other vulnerable groups), Political, Philosophy, Environment, Economic, Cultural (beliefs, attitude, values, ethics ), Linguistic\/Local, International, Humanistic, history, Governance, Administration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stakeholders to Analyse from different perspectives\n<ul>\n<li>Individual, Family, Community , Society, Nation, Humanity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Conclusion\n<ul>\n<li>Suggestion, Reiterate your core argument, Positive, Reserve best for here<\/li>\n<li>I would try to use parallelism if i can. For Ex \u2013 Read MLK I have a dream speech<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Few More Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose a topic where you can argue in a reasonable and balanced manner<\/li>\n<li>Find the spirit of the topic<\/li>\n<li>Argument should be coherent.<\/li>\n<li>Present opposite side<\/li>\n<li>Introductory Hook, Thesis, Background \u2013 should be positive unlike \u201cthe world is in chaos, or pollution will kill us\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Avoid using contraction \u2013 it\u2019s , should\u2019ve etc<\/li>\n<li>Use as less numbers as possible. 2\/3 should be used as two thirds<\/li>\n<li>Bring some originality \u2013 give your opinion,<\/li>\n<li>Substantiate each argument with a \u201cwhy?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>You can use an anecdote from a movie or a book. The more contemporary it is the better it would be<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DON\u2019T FORGET<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WHAT IS BEING TESTED \u2013 YOUR VALUE SYSTEM, YOUR CAPACITY TO ARGUE, YOUR PERSONALITY. YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS NOT BEING TESTED<\/li>\n<li>THERE IS NO RIGHT AND WRONG SIDE IF YOU CAN ARGUE COHERENTLY<\/li>\n<li>NEVER GIVE SHALLOW ARGUMENT.<\/li>\n<li>QUANTITY DOES NOT MATTER. IF YOU CAN ARGUE IN CONCISE MANNER, THAT IS EVEN BETTER<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2 Essay Approach<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80 min for each essay then. (60 min for writing + 20 min for thinking)<\/li>\n<li>First 10 min choose the topic.<\/li>\n<li>Last 10 min to revise.<\/li>\n<li>8-9 pages for each essay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>My <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evernote.com\/pub\/surana90\/essay\"><strong>Essay notes<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evernote.com\/l\/AMq8NshmVdRBoq-iWrmmS-VUsLv6iXlXedc\">Keywords<\/a>\u00a0which can be used in essay<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evernote.com\/shard\/s202\/nl\/26744508\/95d2e52c-bc7b-4dec-9658-2304c372c96d\/\">Essay Notes<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>There are a set of openings and ending which you can use in various essays<\/li>\n<li>for each topic I\u2019ve divided it into\n<ul>\n<li>Data<\/li>\n<li>Issues<\/li>\n<li>Importance<\/li>\n<li>Suggestion<\/li>\n<li>Quotes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Since most of the topics are covered in GS, the notes standalone are not sufficient<\/li>\n<li>There are ample number of references from movies, philospohers, books etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Few\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.evernote.com\/pub\/surana90\/articlesspeecheswriteups\">articles\/speeches<\/a>\u00a0as food for thought<\/li>\n<li>Shabbir sir\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/eqc1l2hx4ivlciw\/Abhishek_Essay_Notes_Vajiram.pdf?dl=0\">class notes\u00a0 \u2013 Vajiram<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>A big credit goes to him.
