{"id":199548,"date":"2022-08-10T18:32:22","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T13:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=199548"},"modified":"2022-08-10T18:32:22","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T13:02:22","slug":"ocean-thermal-energy-conversion-plant-coming-up-in-lakshadweep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ocean-thermal-energy-conversion-plant-coming-up-in-lakshadweep\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ocean thermal energy conversion plant coming up in Lakshadweep\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u201cOcean thermal energy conversion plant coming up in Lakshadweep\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> Down to Earth <\/b>on<b> 8th August 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Ocean Technology, an autonomous institute under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is establishing an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) plant with a capacity of 65 kilowatts (kW) in Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant is the first of its kind in the world as it will generate drinking water from seawater using indigenous technology, green energy and environmentally friendly processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is <\/b><b>Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) is a process or technology for producing energy by harnessing the temperature differences (thermal gradients) between ocean surface waters and deep ocean waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially in tropical regions, surface water can be much warmer than deep water because of the Sun&#8217;s heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This temperature difference can be used to produce electricity and desalinate ocean water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTEC systems use a temperature difference (of at least 77\u00b0F) to power a turbine to produce electricity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How does OTEC plant work? <\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warm surface water is pumped through an evaporator containing a working fluid. The vaporized fluid drives a turbine\/generator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the vaporized fluid is turned back to a liquid in a condenser cooled with cold ocean water pumped from deeper into the ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTEC systems use seawater as the working fluid and can use condensed water to produce desalinated water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Advantages of OTEC: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the biggest advantages of OTEC are: <\/span><b>1) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It produces clean environmentally friendly renewable energy and <\/span><b>2)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unlike solar plants which can&#8217;t work at night and wind turbines which only work when it&#8217;s windy, OTEC can produce energy at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Disadvantages of OTEC:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The disadvantages <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are that <strong>a)<\/strong> It is economically expensive and <strong>b)<\/strong> It only works in a few regions of the world as the required temperature difference is only present in tropical waters.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cOcean thermal energy conversion plant coming up in Lakshadweep\u201d published in Down to Earth on 8th August 2022.
