It is experiencing a slowing <strong>population growth rate<\/strong> due to constant <strong>low mortality<\/strong> and rapidly <strong>declining fertility<\/strong>. Its population growth is further expected to fall to 1% by 2025.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-un-world-population-prospects-report-and-population-issues-in-india\/\">The UN World Population Prospects Report and Population Issues in India \u2013 Explained, pointwise<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5><strong>What are the challenges in Demographic Transition?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Several States have not achieved a <strong>low TFR.<\/strong> This has been due to high illiteracy levels, rampant child marriage, high levels of under-five mortality rates, low workforce participation of women, and low contraceptive usage compared to other states.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Male-dominant sex ratio<\/strong>: In 1951, the country had a sex ratio of 946 females per 1,000 males. It has come down to 943 females per 1,000 males in 2011. The major causes behind this decline are the preference for <strong>sons<\/strong> and <strong>sex selection<\/strong> (both pre-and post-natal)<\/p>\n<p>Some communities face challenges like <strong>marriage squeeze<\/strong> due to an imbalance between the number of men and women available to marry in a specific society and eventual <strong>bride purchase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India stands 101 out of 116 nations in the <strong>Global Hunger Index<\/strong>. Anaemia and stuntedness remain high despite ongoing the <strong>Public Distribution System<\/strong> and the <strong>Midday Meals Scheme.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Serious health risks: <\/strong>In 75 years, India\u2019s health problems have shifted from <strong>communicable diseases<\/strong> to <strong>non-communicable diseases (NCDs)<\/strong>. For example, India is home to over eight crore people with diabetes. In contrast, <strong>India\u2019s health-care infrastructure<\/strong> is highly inadequate and inefficient, India\u2019s <strong>public health financing<\/strong> is low which is among the <strong>lowest percentages<\/strong> in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The share of India\u2019s elderly population is now increasing and is expected to be 12% by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other issues in harnessing the demographic dividend: a)\u00a0<\/strong>India\u2019s labour force is constrained by the absence of women from the workforce; i.e., only a fourth of women are employed, <strong>b)<\/strong>\u00a0Poor quality of educational attainments and lack of the basic skills required for the modernised job market, <strong>c)\u00a0<\/strong>India\u2019s one of the world\u2019s lowest employment rates is another enormous hurdle in reaping the \u2018demographic dividend\u2019.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What should be done to harness demographic dividends?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There is a need to ameliorate the <strong>status of women<\/strong> in Indian society, and quality of life.
