But there <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was little solid evidence for its support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meteorite impacts generated massive energy to form oceanic plates which later evolved into continents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the researchers have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found the most robust evidence showing that Earth\u2019s continents were formed by giant meteorite impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the evidence researchers have found?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Zircon crystals in Pilbara Craton<\/b><b>:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers looked for evidence in zircon crystals embedded in rocks from the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia. This craton is the remnant of an ancient crust that began forming more than three billion years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>craton is an old and stable part <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the continental lithosphere, which consists of Earth\u2019s two topmost layers, the crust and the uppermost mantle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2013 Zircons are formed by the crystallization of magma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or are found in metamorphic rocks. They act as tiny time capsules, recording the period of geologic activity. Newer zircon adds to the original crystal as time progresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Findings: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studying the composition of oxygen isotopes in these zircon crystals, the researchers have found a \u2018top-down\u2019 process starting with the melting of rocks near the surface and progressing deeper, consistent with the geological effect of giant meteorite impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of this study?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the formation and ongoing evolution of the Earth\u2019s continents is crucial given that these landmasses host the majority of Earth\u2019s biomass, all humans and nearly all of the planet\u2019s important mineral deposits.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cHow did continents form?
