What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The Union <\/span>Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister has approved the \u201cWidening access of the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library(TKDL) database to users, besides patent offices\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Traditional Knowledge Digital Library(TKDL)?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Established in: <\/b>2001 <\/span><\/p>\n

Established by<\/strong>: Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H, now Ministry of AYUSH).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Purpose<\/b>: It is a first-of-its-kind database <\/span>on Indian systems of medicine for preventing bio-piracy and misappropriation of our traditional knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Features<\/b>: The TKDL currently contains information from existing literature related to <\/span>Indian Systems of Medicine(<\/span>ISM) such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Yoga.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 The information is documented in a digitized format in five international languages which are English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 TKDL provides information in languages and formats understandable by patent examiners at Patent Offices worldwide, so as to prevent the erroneous grant of patents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who can access the TKDL database?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Until now, access to the complete TKDL database is restricted to 14 Patent Offices worldwide for the purposes of search and examination.<\/span><\/p>\n

But from now on the TKDL database can also be accessed by users. This <\/span>would be through a paid subscription model with a phase-wise opening to national and international users.<\/span><\/p>\n

Significance: <\/b>This will help drive research and development and innovation based on India\u2019s valued heritage across diverse fields.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
