What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n

To bring about the blue revolution, the <\/span>Technology Development Board(TDB), a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology is funding its first ever \u2018Aquaculture\u2019 project using \u2018state of the art\u2019 Israeli technology for production of Tilapia Fish\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Tilapia Fish?<\/b><\/h5>\n

\u2018Tilapia\u2019 has emerged to be one of the most productive and internationally traded food fish in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The culture of tilapia has become commercially popular in many parts of the world and fishery experts have dubbed the tilapia as \u201caquatic chicken\u201d due to its quick growth and low maintenance cultivation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the aquaculture project for the production of Tilapia Fish?<\/b><\/h5>\n

In order to facilitate the culture of Tilapia in India in a responsible manner, M\/s Fountainhead Agro Farms Private Limited envisages setting up a complete production line (from breeding to full fish) in Mudhol (Karnataka).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The company aims to produce 500 tons of Tilapia to be grown from the imported parent broodstock \u2018Hermon\u2019 from Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Hermon?<\/b><\/h5>\n

Hermon is a hybrid of two selected strains of Tilapia, namely Oreochromis Niloticus (Male) and Oreochromis Aureus (Female).<\/span><\/p>\n

It is known for special characteristics such as high growth rate; resistance to low temperature; light (attractive) colour; all hybrid fry progeny of males only, without the conventional system of usage of hormones.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the significance of this project?<\/b><\/h5>\n

The project will be a great addition to <\/span>Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana(PMMSY) <\/span><\/a>which aims to double the export earnings to Rs.1,00,000 crore from the fisheries sector.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
