{"id":200992,"date":"2022-08-22T17:36:56","date_gmt":"2022-08-22T12:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=200992"},"modified":"2022-08-22T17:36:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T12:06:56","slug":"the-problem-with-indias-sporting-bodies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-problem-with-indias-sporting-bodies\/","title":{"rendered":"The problem with India\u2019s sporting bodies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> The post is based on an article <strong>\u201cThe problem with India\u2019s sporting bodies\u201d<\/strong> published in the<strong> Indian Express<\/strong> on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> August 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS 2 <\/strong>Government Policies and Interventions for Development in various sectors and Issues arising out of their Design and Implementation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong> In recent times, the national sports administration bodies for Olympic, football, hockey and few others are in court, due to governance related challenges.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History of sports\u2019 administration reforms in India <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In 2016, the Supreme Court passed a landmark ruling that agreed to the wholescale changes to the BCCI constitution that were recommended by the <strong>Justice R M Lodha committee<\/strong> for BCCI reforms.<\/p>\n<p>Like in cricket, the SC-handpicked Committee of Administrators (CoA) are in-charge of all major sports in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The courts and the <strong>CoA in-charge of football<\/strong> are of the view that the 50% of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) executive committee should comprise \u201ceminent players\u201d as co-opted members.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the issues in sports administration in India<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Governance of India&#8217;s national sports federations are not at par with the international standards.\u00a0This misadministration is posing threats of international bans and administrative uncertainty.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Have the intentions of the court matched the implementation?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In the cricket administration, the <strong>Supreme Court\u2019s verdict<\/strong> related to BCCI reforms hasn\u2019t been fully implemented in letter or spirit. Cricket\u2019s constitutional ambiguity continues since the BCCI\u2019s plea, pointing to practical difficulties in implementing the <strong>Lodha reforms, <\/strong><em>i<\/em>s still pending.<\/p>\n<p>The view of experts and reformers that appointment of players in large no. can bring changes to the sporting governance, has proved to wrong till now.<strong> Following are some examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> The celebrated French footballer Michel Platini was jailed recently for a financial fraud he committed as FIFA vice president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Despite the appointment of <strong>charismatic former Indian player<\/strong> Saurav Ganguli as the president of BCCI, cricket governance has not changed much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> The players haven\u2019t been able to make improvements as they remain vulnerable to temptations and lack resolve to change the old system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on an article \u201cThe problem with India\u2019s sporting bodies\u201d published in the Indian Express on 22nd August 2022.
