But the percentage of women researchers in the social sciences and humanities is much higher at 36.4%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Participation (of women) is healthy till the postgraduate level. But there is a drop at the post-doctoral level, where most of the research takes place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Women in R&amp;D Projects: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 28% of participants in extramural Research &amp; Development projects in 2018-19 were women, up from 13% in 2000-01.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The number of women principal investigators in R&amp;D had risen more than four times from 232 in 2000-01 to 941 in 2016-17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Women in Science Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/all-india-survey-on-higher-educationaishe-2019-20\/\">All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2019<\/a><\/strong> showed 53% and 55% participation of women in science education at the Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s levels respectively. But at the doctoral level, women graduates (44%) lagged behind men (56%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Department of Science and Technology: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the 97 scientists in the Department of Science and Technology (DST), 35 are women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The big achievement is that 11 out of 18 divisions in the DST are now headed by women, that is 61%, probably the largest percentage of women in leadership in any government department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Other Institutions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/pm-addresses-inaugural-session-of-fourth-edition-of-the-international-conference-on-disaster-resilient-infrastructure\/\"> Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure(CDRI)<\/a><\/strong> has 18%, NIPER Hyderabad 21%, and Defence Bio-Engineering and Electro-Medical Lab(DEBEL) in Bangalore has 33%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the initiatives by the Government to promote Women in Science?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/initiatives-for-gender-advancement-and-equality-in-academic-and-research-institutions\/\"><b>Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions(GATI)<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/vigyan-jyoti-programme\/\"><b>Vigyan Jyoti Programme<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/vigyan-jyoti-programme\/\"><b>Other Initiatives<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post is based on the article \u201cNumber of women scientists up; CSIR head aims at further push\u201d published in Indian Express on 23rd August 2022.
