{"id":202241,"date":"2022-08-27T19:29:06","date_gmt":"2022-08-27T13:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=202241"},"modified":"2022-08-27T19:29:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-27T13:59:06","slug":"paddy-dwarfing-pau-decodes-mystery-blames-virus-first-reported-in-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/paddy-dwarfing-pau-decodes-mystery-blames-virus-first-reported-in-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Paddy dwarfing: PAU decodes mystery, blames virus first reported in China"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201cPaddy dwarfing: PAU decodes mystery, blames virus first reported in China\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on<b> 27th August 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists at Punjab Agricultural University(PAU) have found that the disease that has impacted the paddy crop in Punjab and Haryana was Southern Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Virus (SRBSDV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first time that SRBSDV has been found in Punjab.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is <\/b><b>Southern Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Virus(SRBSDV)?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a viral disease that has infected the paddy crops in Haryana and Punjab causing \u201cdwarfing\u201d of the plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Named After:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is named after Southern China where it was first reported in 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transmitted by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is transmitted by white-backed plant hopper(WBPH) in a persistent circulative and propagative manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 The long-distance transmission of this virus may occur through WBPH migrating with typhoons and strong convection winds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Since there was no corrective measure for this viral disease, farmers have been advised several measures which include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Firstly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Farmers should regularly monitor the crop for the presence of WBPH and a few plants should be slightly tilted and tapped 2-3 times at the base at weekly intervals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Secondly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if WBPH nymphs\/adults are seen floating on water, then insecticides can be sprayed towards the base of the plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><b> Lastly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, farmers are advised to follow the transplanting dates advised by PAU since stunting was observed to be more in the early transplanted crops.
